Brand new loader but I've been hunting since 1957. Help this old Bowhunter dog learn some new tricks..... If I'd known I would live this long...........
I had shoulder surgery in Feb and have a couple more months before I can shoot my Vanguard 30-06. Trying to use this time to load up some ammo for Elk hunting, range practice and some steel.
I like the Norma Bondstrike 180 and have Hornaday 180 but will probably load 165 Hornady for future use to lesson the kick. I have several hundred bullets in those weights plus 168 in SST, Accubond and ballistic tip. I haven't seen any Norma 204 powder - that is what they use (??) but have accumulated Ramshot Hunter, H 4350, Varget, IMR 4064, Reloder 15 and 19. CCI large rifle Primers came yesterday.
A friend gave me some Federal primers and I've loaded - but not shot- some .5 grain test rounds below max from the Hornady book. A Speer book came with the RCBS loader set. REm resized case, 168 BT and Hunter.
NOt sure i can do much more with the -06 until I can shoot with DR's approval Est August ....
So I'm working on a lighter recoil 24" Howa heavy barrel 10 twist 6.5 Creedmoor from Brownell coupled to a BRG Bravo chassis, SS 5-20 x50 and I just put in Timney triggers in both the Vanguard and Howa. I have Hornady 95, 120 and 140 rounds. 100 new Norma brass and 3 factory 140gr boxes from Hornady, Norma and Seliot B.... for sighting in and barrel break in. I have primed 20 cases and it looks like I won't need to bevel trim the throats(?)
Need help here --The load books seem to show faster burn at the top and slower further down (?) The 6.5 info in Speer is minimal.
Emphasis now is double checking torque values and bore sighting the scope- then trying to be patient.....
I will build some test loads for later and use the FMJ rounds initially until break in then will set up a chrono to run though the test loads.
I realize my shotgun, get it when it shows up approach for powder and bullets lacks good planning- but this is wehre I am.
Thoughts and recommendations please.
