Brand new loader but I've been hunting since 1957. Help this old Bowhunter dog learn some new tricks..... If I'd known I would live this long........... ;)

I had shoulder surgery in Feb and have a couple more months before I can shoot my Vanguard 30-06. Trying to use this time to load up some ammo for Elk hunting, range practice and some steel.
I like the Norma Bondstrike 180 and have Hornaday 180 but will probably load 165 Hornady for future use to lesson the kick. I have several hundred bullets in those weights plus 168 in SST, Accubond and ballistic tip. I haven't seen any Norma 204 powder - that is what they use (??) but have accumulated Ramshot Hunter, H 4350, Varget, IMR 4064, Reloder 15 and 19. CCI large rifle Primers came yesterday.
A friend gave me some Federal primers and I've loaded - but not shot- some .5 grain test rounds below max from the Hornady book. A Speer book came with the RCBS loader set. REm resized case, 168 BT and Hunter.
NOt sure i can do much more with the -06 until I can shoot with DR's approval Est August ....

So I'm working on a lighter recoil 24" Howa heavy barrel 10 twist 6.5 Creedmoor from Brownell coupled to a BRG Bravo chassis, SS 5-20 x50 and I just put in Timney triggers in both the Vanguard and Howa. I have Hornady 95, 120 and 140 rounds. 100 new Norma brass and 3 factory 140gr boxes from Hornady, Norma and Seliot B.... for sighting in and barrel break in. I have primed 20 cases and it looks like I won't need to bevel trim the throats(?)

Need help here --The load books seem to show faster burn at the top and slower further down (?) The 6.5 info in Speer is minimal.

Emphasis now is double checking torque values and bore sighting the scope- then trying to be patient.....

I will build some test loads for later and use the FMJ rounds initially until break in then will set up a chrono to run though the test loads.

I realize my shotgun, get it when it shows up approach for powder and bullets lacks good planning- but this is wehre I am.

Thoughts and recommendations please.

95 grain for varmits and plinking ( few bullets available)
Others to set up for target and steel- maybe deer. I'll never get to organized competition level but may have some challenge BR shoots with a couple buddies who have shown me .38 targets.

Also to hone and keep shooting skills. Hope to get another ELK this season- the last big game with a firearm before last December was 1974 in OK with a shotgun slug. Took a lot of Elk and deer with archery- just can't keep up or run ahead anymore.Elk Pack WA.jpg

Can't help with the Creedmoor but if you get back to shooting the 06, IMR 4350 will work very well with bullets, 165 grain and over.

My best friend took a 5x4 Elk in Colorado last November with a single shot from a 60-year-old, 308 using 165 Accubonds.

I'll have to wait a couple more months before shooting the -06, so am working up loads for the 6.5 starting with Norma brass and Varget and 123 FMJ 'seconds' from Midway . Those I've checked weigh and measure the same and will certainly work for breaking in a new barrel and getting used to this set up.

I just finished setting the triggers to 1.9# ( aiming for 2 but ... )

From the powders you have listed, H4350 would be my choice with 140 gr bullets. IIRC the 6.5 Creedmoor design was created around the 140 gr wt bullet. I've also experimented with Superformance powder and 140 gr ELD-Ms with good results. Not a barn burner load but accurate and consistent.

Also the Hornady factory 140 gr ammo has proven to shoot very consistent as well, as I shot quite a bit of it for brass to reload with.

Thanks for the info. I wondered why 140 shows up so much in load reports.
I have three boxes of factory 140 in addition to 300 Hornady bullets to load into 100 new Norma cases. Planning to get 4-6 reloads on the brass

H4350 reigns king for 6/6.5 Creedmoor imo. I've also used Varget for some lighter projectile loads and it works ok but I prefer H4350.

Curious where you got the CCI large rifle primers. In my area I might as well be trying to buy plutonium. I'm actually thinking about moving to small primer brass.

Hi Kodak. Some thoughts on your original post...

RL19 is very similar to N204. There was even a rumor way back that they were the same.

A 10 twist 6.5 barrel? Hmmmmm...

Bevel trim the throats? IMO all new brass should be beburred lightly after, at least, running the expander ball thru the necks in case any were dented or dinged.

Yes, the Hornady book appears to have powder listed in decreasing approx. burn rate.

Beware of trying to reload that Sellier & Bellot brass without some work. The primer pockets in the stuff I have are smaller diameter & way too shallow for US made primers. Maybe you'll be lucky & it's been corrected? Do you know not to mix brands of brass due to case capacity inconsistencies between brands?

The concensus is H4350 is "the" powder for 140s. I must have tried a really poor lot, because it wasn't all that great in my rifle. Keep an eye out for RL26. You'll be glad you did if it ever comes around again.

Also I've had good luck with 120 Ballistic Tips, 129 Hornady SpPt, or 130 Sierra TGK using RL16, or RL15, or Varget. Your 4064 also could work well here. You might like the slightly lighter recoil of the 120/130s too.

Graf's has PPU bullets regularly. They aren't Sierras or Bergers, but they're cheap & often available. My rifle likes the 121 gr HPBT for plinking bullets.

Good luck & keep that arm moving.

Edited for spelling.

Definitely, if he had mentioned that he had RL 16 I would have recommended that along with H4350. Staball 6.5 has also shown promise with heavier gr bullets in my 6.5 CM as well, using 153 gr Atips.

My fishing buddyj told me to get on this site as i'll find lots of good information. Double Wow he was right!!

Yes on the brass. I have seperate canisters for Norma Nosler and Springfield. Judy likes Springfield for her lefty -06 BDL she's been shooting for 44 years- she can out shoot me so she can have what ever she wants. :)

The S & B was cheap - plan to help break in the barrel with it.

Ooops, the -06 is 10 twist, 6.5 is 8. Good catch- I changed it

I got some Ramshot Zip and Winchester primers anticipating that I'd load 45 ACP and 357 Mag. I have a lot 45 brass not much 357 and 38 special. Guessing I can use the same dies for the last two ??

Before I found the blue box CCI primers I ordered these Not for Resale ones. Any cautions? ( I remove the tag from mattresses too )

JMO, I don't know why everybody rants over H4350, RL16 is the better powder for the 6.5CM, if your barrel likes it? It's the only powder I use for the 6.5CM, very temp stable accurate with the 147gn ELDM's and higher velocities! My brother runs the 140's with RL16 with several different bullets and shoots very small groups @200+yds, I personally like the higher BC bullets and get very good accuracy from my 24'' 1&8 barrel, sub MOA @200m from a factory rifle,

Those are actually my favorite primers, they are good to go. I have a few hundred left and haven't been able to find any anywhere.
