Right die, wrong idiot behind the press
Glad you came back and gave us a update. Stay with these guys, the only way to learn is to ask questions and apparently we love to try to help in anyway we can.Welp.. I'm dumb, and you guys are awesome, I really appreciate the advice.. I just did a fresh piece of brass, bumped it 0.001" using the comparator thing, and it chambered perfectly. For posterity's sake, things I did dumb:
1. I had the brass in the shell holder when I set up the sizing die, so it was nowhere near the shell plate, and thus didn't resize a damn thing.
2. I used the RCBS "jaws" trimmer that chewed up the bottom of the brass
3. I didn't trim evenly somehow -- pretty decent 0.0007 difference depending on the rotation of the brass in my calipers

I don't have a neck sizing die.. just the FL sizing die and seating die that came in the hornady set.. I didn't put a bushing in, but I thought it had one built in?You did put a bushing in to size the neck? Not trying to simplify it too much but if you are "new" new then this is easily overlooked.
Nope bushings are separate and has to be installed.I don't have a neck sizing die.. just the FL sizing die and seating die that came in the hornady set.. I didn't put a bushing in, but I thought it had one built in?
As previously stated you must have (if you have FL bushing dies) a bushing to size the neck, without it would be hard to get the case back in the chamber.I don't have a neck sizing die.. just the FL sizing die and seating die that came in the hornady set.. I bought a regular set of custom grade Hornady dies for my nephew and they were standard non-bushing dies.
By the way what lube are you using to size with?
For playing around I just used one-shot. I've got imperial for when I go load for real.I bought a regular set of custom grade Hornady dies for my nephew and they were standard non-bushing dies.

Yep, its the 2-die set, no bushings..Whether a busing is required will depend on which specific Hornady die set he's using. By japhar81's description, it sounds like a standard, non-bushing, 2 die set.
