New to F Class competitive shooting, scope assistance~

Hello brothers & sisters,

New to this forum, so hello from Crook County Chicago, Illinois lol~ I recently purchased a Savage Ashbury Precision .308 rifle to get into F Class competitive shooting. I figured the .308 platform is a nice starting point since I’m very familiar with the caliber due to my military background and combat experience.

Looking at some scope options, in the Vortex line such as the Golden Eagle (15-60X52) and the Vortex Razor HD (5-20X50) line. Since Vortex has a generous discount option for Military/LEO and their lifetime warranty is outstanding, then why not?

Also, my budget doesn’t allow me to purchase 3k and up scopes at least for now I can’t, so Vortex it is. I’ll be shooting precision shots at 300 yards, 400 and 600 yards. So I’m in between the Golden Eagle and the Razor HD~ So if you had to go with one scope, which one would you choose from the above choices?

Thanks~

I can't comment on the Razor, but I own the Golden Eagle and I can say it's very good. I use it for 600 yd F/TR and BR matches. People who I compete against with scopes costing $1000 more than mine claim they think my Golden Eagle is more clear. Others have said the same thing on the Internet. I think it's a very good deal at $1500 and even better if you can get a military discount.

I just mounted my Vortex Golden Eagle last week. I have been behind it twice, and it is a lot of scope for the money. I believe this scope would fill your needs for F/Class better than the Razor. I believe the Razor is more suitable for PRS matches, and an excellent scope in its price range.

40% off $1499 is not bad~ :) That's $600 off

I own one and use for .308 FTR. I echo Mozella's comments 100%

Not looking at the Gen 1 but the Gen 2 option~ Thanks
You stated the 5-20x50 in your post. The Gen 2 Razor is 4.5-27X56. Sorry about the confusion. That being said, I think an 1/8 MOA scope would be a better choice for F-Class or BR. Any other type of shooting the Razor is good stuff.

The golden Eagle is a competition scope, the razor is not. Pretty easy choice.

Last time i talked to vortex a month or so ago they were way way out on the wait list. 6 months to a year... somewhere in there..

Unfortunately, Europtics is not willing to match Vortex discount for Military/Sworn public safety personnel. So I will have to order it directly from Vortex

This I forgot about. When I was in Kentucky in May my buddy had a Gen2 PST on order from Vortex since December '16. He received it at the end of May.

Razor is a competition scope but just would work better for a different competition. ;)

That said Chicago FF the Golden Eagle would be the best choice for your use between the two. I own both. Also the wait times given are usually a little longer than actual. You will get it sooner most times.

Stay safe brother. I just retired 2 weeks ago after a little over 22 years on the job.

Enjoy your retirement~ Stay safe and live a healthy, happy, stress free life~ The job indeed is very stressful~ but as long as you take care of your body, feed it the right foods, exercise, stay active all that in conjunction helps minimized the damage~ Oh and wearing your SCBA too :)
