Scope experience -- Vortex 15-60x

I felt it was due to the HD glass. Sightron 10-50 also has a small exit pupil also yet the image quality doesn’t darken the same as the GE. I’m not expert on these matters just a user of both scopes and that’s just my opinion.

The sightron has a 60mm front lens so at 50 it has an exit pupil of 60/50 or 1.2 mm exit pupil. A little bigger than the size of a human pupil in bright sunlight. That is why you “see” it brighter. The GE at 55 is 52/55 exit pupil or .945 mm which is smaller so it seems less bright. I run mine at 40x so I have an exit pupil of 1.3 mm so I have good latitude of head position with as bright as it will be.

And the s3 sightrons have a level of ed glass not as good as higher grades but good and ed glass doesn’t make a scope dark.

Thank you for this information.

Maybe that’s it, IDK for sure but honestly feel that lens coatings play their role. I’ve moved on from both and now shoot a NF comp with ED glass, at full power it’s clear and bright with great image quality.

I've just not been impressed with that Vortex scope. I'd rather have a used NF 12-42 BR vs a new vortex. Basically, same money. Both are heavy if that's of any concern. There are better options than both but those two options are same price wise.

I have one on one of my f class rifles. I normally use it on 40 power. It works fine for mid and long range. Yes there are better scopes out there but the golden eagle will work fine for you if that's the one you are wanting. I would suggest going to a match and looking through some different scopes. Most people will be glad to let you look through their scope.

Glass has two properties that are important. One is the transmissive effect( how clear it is) and the reflective property where it reflects back about 5% of the incident light. You cannot enhance the transmissive property but coatings can minimize the reflective property immensely. The standard is now to coat all lenses not just the front surface of the front lens and the rear surface of the eyepiece. In doing so most scopes are above 90%, more like 94% of all light transmitted to the eyepiece.

I too have looked through a NF comp. In NC air on a hot muggy day it was no better than my sightron s3 8-32x56 or my NF NXS 8-32x56. But at 55 it was a bigger target for sure.

They are significantly lighter than the SVSS. Much easier to make 17# long range light gun with a S3, GE, or NF than an SVSS, Majesta, or other 34+mm tube scopes. Of course none of these are much help for a 10.5# short range gun where ounces are extremely precious.

I like my GE. The ECR reticle and the turret markings are excellent, especially compared to what Sightron did on the SVSS. Optical clarity is only one part of enjoying a scope.

I will agree that everyone has a different viewing experience, it should be encouraging to 8-32 Sightron owners ( I’ve had one also) that you felt they were on par with the NF comp. I was actually going to keep one for a back up but it got sold with all the others.
Oh well easy come easy go.
