New to 6BR - please advise on proposed barrel order

Hi all. I'm taking the plunge and ordering a 6BR barrel for one of my Savage rifles.

I'm planning on getting one from Shilen, pre-chambered and ready to install.

I am not planning on competing, but just want a fairly low-recoil way to shoot targets,80%) and varmints,20%) up to 500 yards accurately.

I do reload but don't want much cartridge prep fuss. Therefore, I think I want a no-turn neck and will probably be using Lapua brass.

Here are my specs so far:

Shilen Stainless Select Match Grade
Either 1:8" or 1:10" twist
Chambered in 6MM BR,.272 neck -- "Norma" according to Shilen's website)

Any comments would be welcome as to the twist or the neck spec.

John, I shoot more varmint than paper, it tends to be windy An d I plan to shoot out ot 600. I went with A 1-10 Twist shooting 75-90 grain bullets and that should be optimium.If you plan on the heavier bullets go to the 1-8. I went with a tight neck on my gunsmiths advice.But shooting large quantities,doing it again I would go with the no turn .272 neck Good Luck

I did the same thing but used a Pac Nor pre chambered barrel, 8 twist, with a freebore that lets the 107 go down to the neck junction and I can get a 58 Vmax to the lands with it. It is also a no neck turn Lapua chamber. Very accurate and easy to clean.

Get the 8" twist....and no-turn neck....it will shoot anything from 60 gr sierra to 107 sierra perfectly,and anything in between)...Roger

Just got one from Pac Nor. Took some 60gr. Bergers and seated them down to the shoulder/neck junction in dummy rounds.
I'll find out tomorrow how well it works.
Can't shoot anything smaller than 60gr. Berger and jam to the lands. Got a Shilen that will take anything up to 107s.
Confused by the numbers as far as what "freebore" to order?
No guessing required. Send a "dummy round" and you get exactly what you want!

I'm real confused by the 6mmbr chamber specs. I'm trying to build a 6mm br with the Lapua spec chamber,as suggested on this site, can't find the source right now tho) on a Savage rifle. I am ready to order a Pac Nor but on their web site they only list Norma spec for this caliber. How did you all order your chamber from them. What did you get? Are you using Laupa brass in you rifle? How well does it shoot, what size groups? This is my first custom barrel and I really don't want to screw it up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Hank

OK, so now if I understand correctly, 6mm chamber has 2 specs, one for Norma, and an older? less desirerable? Remington one, which is the SAMMI spec. The Norma spec is tighter and therefore, potentially more accurrate, and gives better brass life.

I found lead and freebore info that I feel comfortable with on another post. I think I'm getting to where I need to be, thanks again.

Did you chamber any of your guns for any improved version of the 6mm? Hank

The Rem chamber is shorter and you would have to trim the Lapua brass. Another problem is that Lapua is bigger in the web area dn causes tight bolt in a Rem chamber.

You are confirming what have read elsewhere. The standard 6mm br chamber is shorter and slightly fatter at the base than the Lapua brass. A significant advantage of the Norma brass is the longer neck, providing better support for a larger range of bullets, and having the ability to seat short bullets far enough out to engage the lands. Since most of the barrel web sites I've checked out indicate that they use the Remington spec. How does one go about getting a Norma spec chamber. The only way I know of would be to order a custom reamer and ask the barrel maker to use it. Did I miss something?

Thanks for the input on the Dasher. That's the variant that made the most sense to me. I'm not inclined to add that much more complication to my project at this time, but if a custom reamer is the only way to get the Norma chamber, maybe it makes sense to go all the way. Thanks, Hank
