I'm going to leave that to the guy that gets this one. When I get tired of pumping out the copies, I'll pick the best one and have at it.That would look nice all checkered up.........
I would start on scrap though !!!!
Tikka Master Sporter?
I played around with gluing up "scrap" blanks (no dimensional lumber easily available commercially is thick enough), but the few bucks saved weren't worth the hassle.
Now, I order blanks with sapwood (cheaper than all heartwood), or even ask for "rejects" with knots, etc to use for patterns/practice from my supplier when ordering.
Looking good.
If you have a lathe, you can cut oversize tracing styluses from acetal that allow you to cut your stocks oversize (I go about .030 over) to allow for sanding down to finish size; though I've found in the end it really doesn't matter much if the stock ends up a bit undersize, as long as it's correct at the inletting.
If you don't already have one, an oscillating spindle sander is ideal for this work.
The guy getting the latest one is a Lucky fellow.I'm going to leave that to the guy that gets this one. When I get tired of pumping out the copies, I'll pick the best one and have at it.![]()
Yup. Master Sporter hybrid. It's my niche! Notice the sheet metal on the butt. There's 3 sheets of rubber roofing under that to add thickness. I cast some epoxy styluses oversized. No lathe here. This stock needs a 10/4 blank. Most of my boards are 8/4 in the rough so I glue another board on the side. These are shooters, not show pieces.![]()
Yeah, sometimes blank dimensions are tight.
I've been doing stocks for the custom MN's I build for years- it has a big vertical grip and I had to send a paper pattern to my hardwood supplier to keep on file to make sure there was enough depth to the blank in the grip area.
Right on with the epoxy cast. I've done that too with some radius bits for barrel channels. If you need any styluses for your straight bits happy to help, only takes a few minutes to turn them. He only sends a few with the machines...
I tried to find one of those stocks (the covered mag looked perfect if I could adapt it for the MN) forever with no luck..If ya get caught up and would be interested in selling me a rough copy, pm me.
wats that roll of stuff on your work benchSlogging forward, I finished the butt shaping and recoil pad install. A few more minor details and she's ready for final sanding.

ok thanks for that infoLeft over rubber roofing from my building days. I use it as a scratch and ding preventer. It's 1/16" thick. It comes in 8' and 10' rolls up to 100 ft long for flat roofs on commercial/industrial buildings. It was supposed to replace hot tar roofing. It doesn't last anywhere near as long, tho.
