New shooter looking for advice and information

Hello I am intrested in getting into competitive shooting and i am looking for some information. I want to get into benchrest or prone comp. I need some advice on a good starting rifle. I can only spend around $2000 on rifle and scope. I am looking for a center fire been considering a rem 700p or used rem 40x with weaver scope. Thanks for any info.

Where are you located? Most benchrest shooters are always willing to help an interested shooter. They are always wanting to help promote their sport and they can save you alot of money in many ways.

Google Long Range Competition and/or Rifle Clubs for your area and go to some matches. Shooters are very helpful with new shooters and will have insight into what equipment might be available on the used market. Someone may loan you a rifle and some equipment to try out a discipline to see which of the many you would enjoy most. Benchrest, Long Range High Power, F-Class, and Tactical are all different. You might consider reading 'Precision Shooting at 1000 Yards', a great book that covers all but Tactical disciplines.
I waited ten years too long, go for it and welcome!

P.S. If it were me, I would buy one of the Savage target rifles (F-Class, F-T/R, Palma or Benchrest) and buy used sights or scope (Leupold has a lifetime, no qruestions asked warrantee that can't be beat). I've seen the Palma model for as little as $1400 and they all shoot really well.

I am on deployment but i am from Maine. I know there is a range in hampden for up to 600yrd but not much other than that in my area.

I agree with watercam, Savage F-class or similar are very hard to beat for a factory gun. The 6br is easy to tune with a wealth of info on this site for loads and tuning. Welcome to the game....

If you have 2000.00 to spend i would suggest keeping an eye on the for sale section here and not be in a rush. Their has been some mighty fine custom bench rifles for sale lately at good prices.

Welcome to the site,

I'm new here to, but here's a site I recently found. Good luck with your choice of caliber.

Thanks for all the great info every one. I think that I am finly getting an idea of what i want for a rifle and have been watching the for sale list on this site. I will check out that book watercam 'Precision Shooting at 1000 Yards' is there a online publication of that by any chance?

I have a great rifle listed in the for sale section. It is a custom 6br built on the new Savage target action with accu trigger. The barrel is a Krieger 26" 1-8 twist heavy fluted and is bedded in a SSS laminated stock. Less than 100 rds. down the tube. Only reason for selling is to build 6.5 x 47. I can send pics to your email if interested. The price is $1,750.00 shipped to your FFL or best offer. Thanks, Bill

Bill, just wondering! We have monthly matches in our area around Baton Rouge. The 6BR sounds nice! I have a 6.5x47L, and oddly a 6.0x47L, just wondering, you think you will like the 6.5 better than the 6BR?
