Long Range Action?

I do appreciate the offer, I would love to actually handle and see some of these actions. Unfortunately I will not be making the journey to Perry this year. Tuff to get vacation this time of year(still considered junior with 10 years on go figure).

Defiance was another one that I have looked at but I know they are fairly new and I don't know much about them.

I have been looking at Bats now because Bruno's has one that I like in stock.

I have also thought about getting a Remmy SA that I have worked. I just figured that by the time I have what I would have done to it (just my personality I would have it all done including a new bolt) I am kinda close to the cost of a custom action why not go for the real deal.

I case you guys haven't figured it out I am thoroughly undecided. But thank you all for your thoughts and insight.

Nick,
John Whidden, 3 time National Long Range Champion and owner of Whidden Gun Works advised me thusly when I asked him about the feasibility of using a 1977 Rem 700 SA for my first Palma gun. "A trued one will work, I have used a Winchester 70 for the same thing." He finished it and I went and picked it up last week. Bartlein gain twist barrel finished at 32 inches, Whidden aluminum bedding block, CG-22 trigger, H&H Prone stock by Alex Sitman at Masterclass, Warner #2 rear and RightSight Fullbore front sight. After I get back from CMP week I'll start load development for it and let you know how it goes...if you're interested.

Froggyone2 and sleepygator,
Thank you for the data. John and I soft seated a round into the rifling and got the COAL to the ogive measurement before I left. I am looking forward to development....there are infinite variables. :o ;D

With the scarcity of Varget and other reloading powders I wonder if one of the black powder substitutes will work? I wonder if a slingshot will stabilize Sierra 155s?

Clowdis,

Thinking about White Hots and lead 155 RN. Just for 800 and 900. Probably would stretch out to over 1/2 MOA at 1000.

Sincerely,
Boob

Bob,

Thanks for the information? I just figured the cost to get an action worked over would not be much cheaper then a custom action and still be a tad behind in terms of quality and precision.

I am very interested in your load work up. I have been doing some research on the gain twist barrels and would like to know how I it performs for you. Good luck with it.

Nick

Nick,
My cost for the action and then having it trued was $450. I was lucky enough to find an early Rem. 700 action with the left side drilled and tapped for a receiver sight, which is how I mounted the Warner. I think Rem quit doing that in the early 80s. John Whidden was the source of my info on the Bartlein gain twist barrel option. I would suggest that you give him a call if you are interested in the gain twist. All this being said, I hope I don't humiliate my rifle.
Bob

Sorry Nick,
Whidden Gunworks 229-686-1911. Also, the twist in this barrel starts out at 1x11 and ends up 1x10 at the muzzle.
Bob

Need to wait until second or so week to call if you want to talk with John. He is at CP competing until August 8 or so

Bob- how you like the CG trigger? I was there when Whidden was setting up the trigger

Thanks for the contact info I will be calling him in a few weeks for some assistance.

I can't find an action for $450 let alone an action tha has been worked over. I figured at least $500 for rifle for an action. $30 for a recoil lug, $100 for a rail or bases, and my smith had told me $250(blueprint/blocking the magazine) for the work on the action. And if i decided to, which i probably would, a PTG replacment bolt another couple hundred. That is getting up in price.

1/10 twist wouldn't that be a little fast for 155? and is it a tight bore barrel?

You would think, but my tactical rifle shoots Berger 155.5 Fullbores unreasonably well in a 10" twist. I shot it in a 1000 yard match and, except for wind beating me up, the load held great elevation.

Nick, I'm pretty sure you're on the right track in figuring costs to true a commercial action, and feel you'll probably be happier in the long run with a custom. I started out with a Nesika K in a Robertson H&H prone stock, and have never regretted that choice. Over the past several years since I started building my own rifles, I've used BAT 3L & 3LL, a couple of Pierce TG actions in Eliseo tubeguns, plus several M700s, a M70, and a couple of Howa 1500s that I've trued. Some of the trued commercial actions I'd put up against any custom action rifle, but a couple have also been a bit disappointing. For me, the bottom line is that I've never been disappointed with the accuracy out of any of the rifles I've built or had built on custom actions.

If I weren't completely satisfied with the custom actions I already have, I'd most certainly be looking at a Barnard. .

Nick,
Sorry for the delay. I just got back from Camp Perry (I am improving each year I go.) The action was from an old ADL that came into the shop where I was working part-time for shooting money. The ground recoil lug was part of the blueprinting deal and you will not believe how reasonable it can be. Of course I won't quote prices on someone's work but you should call him when he gets back. Talk to him before you decide you have to replace the bolt also. If you can afford custom actions go for it. John said he and Burke Lott are having great results with that twist and 155s aaaannndddd it will shoot heavies if you should want too.

Andrew,
Being a service rifle shooter that CG-22 felt SINFUL! I love it. I can't wait to shoot it. I can't get to the range until late next week :'(
