New Savage Take Off Action

Some advice needed. Removed a brand new never fired Savage Model SS 16 action and it was a booger bear to get off. Initially I thought it was galling, but I continued to have some success going back and forth so I alternated between gun flush in the threads and a light oil to prevent any issues. After finally getting it off I immediately noticed two spots in the threads on the action. Rough spot where scope bases screw is and a one inch spot in third row of threads where threads were not cut clean. So my question is, should I try to return to savage if this is even possible, find a 1.12x20tpi die and try to chase it to correct thread issue, or is this very complicated and just pay a gunsmith to correct?

I'm sure I can force it back onto another barrel, but rather not and correct problem so it's no longer an issue in the future.

Thanks ahead for any advice.

JD

Most of the " hard removals so Savages is the steel shot they use on there matte barreled actions . I'd use yours as is , unless you want to square up and true the entire action

If "YOU" removed the barrel, Savage won't do anything for you. Spin it on (after you touch up the threads) and get to shooting.

Photo 3,4 are the only issues . The line in the threads comes from cutting the lug raceway .
Savage won't do anything for you . Shoot it

Gonna have to single point it on a lathe. Savage really dont recommend removing their barrels no matter what youve heard. They even went to the smooth pipe wrench nut to keep em from being removed so i know savage isnt gonna help

appreciate all the replies guys, unfortunately there are not many gunsmiths in my area and the ones I have to drive a couple of hours to will hold it up for months. I ordered a Tap 1.125x20tpi after site went down, it just feels pretty tight when I start spinning on, was afraid it might start screwing up threads on barrel. I want to buy my own lathe, but still shopping around.

I had a similar problem like this and use a Brownells tap to clean the threads. I think something was amiss from the factory. Cleaned up the threads nicely but the missing threads were just that......missing

Yeah, this one had the smooth barrel nut, it was a pain in the butt to get off, had my smooth nut wrench, but with that copper sleeve, I tightened so much, bolt broke in wrench, but it kept trying to spin, not in vise, but on barrel nut. Ended up using an action wrench that Paul Becigneul makes on this site, work like a charm, but it was tight as hell.
