New Savage F-Class long freebore

Hi to all,
This is my first post hope someone can help tried to search but couldnt find the answer I was looking for. Just picked up my new Savage F-Class in 6mm br today, tried to measure to the lands, using a stony point, and also tried a case with a split neck)and cannot get an accurate measurement because the bullet falls out of the case before I get to the lands near as I can figure I am at 2.309 from base of case to ogive but then the bullet base is basically sitting on the case mouth. Anyone else encounter this and if so what length to ogive did you load? This measurement was with a lapua scenar 105, with the stony point I could get the bullet to the lands but the rod was at the top of the case mouth. I had read where the savages had long throats but this seems ridiculous.

By the way great site.

i shoot a 6br savage lrpv..i've only shot 80 gr bergers..using the stoney point the bergers were in the case neck.. sounds to long a throat ..i'd call savage on monday..they are good to deal with

Thanks for the reply, that is kinda what I figured. I shot it today with 107 smks with oal tip to base of 2.4409 it shot alright. Still developing loads. Best 3 shot group at 100 yds was .322 center to center varget 29.7 with cci 450.

Your groups are great, but it sounds as if the barrel is throated too long. I ahve a number of Savages and have alowas been able to reach the rifling without a problem in every caliber I have.

I would call Savage and ask about it. I have found a number of Savage barrels to be bad, but the good news is that Savage will replace them.

Called Savage and am sending gun in, they couldnt tell me what the freebore should be so they will check it out. Thanks for the input.

My 12F touches at 2.375 OAL with the Sierra 107 MK. I shoot them at 2.385 and that provides .230 shank depth, more than enough.

I also checked the Hornady 105 A-Max at 2.333.

I am having the same problem measuring for my new Savage.

I am now going to try using Berger 105s/Varget /CCI 250 primers (to an OAL of 2.4409), though was hoping to get some Lapua ammunition to use as a benchmark.

Was using CCI BR4 primers and Vihtavouri powders and am getting pierced primers.

Unfortunately, I am over the pond and Savage don't accept e-mails at the moment, so I feel like I am fumbling in the dark as this is all new to me (always loaded to magazine length before).

Not a 6BR, but my 6.5x284 was throated long enough that to touch the lands I had less than 1/16" still in the case.

I'm curious to see if Savage will do anything about it. I ended up hanging a new barrel on mine.

Perhaps a bit off topic but my Savage 6mmBR did not have too long a freebore but was so inconsistent in its grouping that I finally gave up on it. It would shoot a couple of good groups but once it was warm the groups scattered.
Though new, it came from a dealer who did some work on it first and it couldn't be warrantied back to Savage. He had no warranty policy so I was SOL. Live and learn the expensive way. I replaced it with a PacNor and couldn't ask for better.

Well i also just started loading for my model12 Benchrest. The gun wouldnt eject a live round and sent it back to Savage 3 times until they replaced it. 8 MONTHS of BS with them!! But anyways i measured 4 bullets with a comparator and here are the results.
105 Amax 1.810 touching
107 sierra 1.820 touching
105 Berger hunting and target 1.760 touching
For my 2 lrpv's add .040 and .045 touching
Please let me know your results with Savage. I had to climb the ladder to get results and still have the contacts if u need them.
