New Savage - Dissappointment!

00scot Well I can't say enough for Savage I bought a Target model 12 Right bolt left port, When I got it In order to remove the bolt you have to press this lever while pressing on the trigger at the same time well it sounds easy but the rifle I got I had a devil of a time to press the lever to remove the bolt. Well instead of contacting Savage I had a friend if mine who is a self professed gunsmith? well he started to monkey with the trigger he filed on the trigger several times He got the lever moving as it should according to the manual with the rifle. I figured I was all set (WRONG) the trigger was now F.U.B.A.R. Wouldn't stay cocked so the next day I called Savage I told them exactly what my friend and I did and that I am really am happy with the rifle. Well I sent it back to Savage I had to send the whole rifle I did $40.00 with priority mail and insurance I learned a hard lesson. Well in a week my rifle was returned from Savage buy UPS they repaired the trigger the lever works as it should the best part there was a bill for the repair my eyes lit up in big bold letters (NO CHARGE) I sinse then had a new rifle that had a slight burr in the barrel. I return it to Savage I told them I shouldn't have to pay for what ever they had to do plus shipping my cost of shipping back to them. Well they replaced the barrel and there was a check in with the rifle for my shipping, they put a new barrel on my rifle and I had it back in a week and a half. We have to realize these rifles are mass produced so there will be problems But I can not praise Savage enough for the service I got. One thing I have learned don't try to pull the wool over thier eyes and say it's a defect by the factory and that is the way you got it doesn't work. In your case it sounds like it was Savages fault all the way. I am 74 and years ago Savages were 2nd class rifles I wouldn't even consider buying one. They have come along way. Good Luck Lou

So your friend caused a gun that was not fully functional to be not fully functional? There was no bill for the repair? Well, if the rifle had not been screwed up to begin with your friend would not have had to mess with it.

And on the other one the barrel was junk but you are happy they replaced it for free. I should not have needed replacing to begin with, it's a new gun!

Sounds like you guys buy Savages expecting them to be crappy, and when the factory makes them less crappy, you guys praise them for their customer service. That's not how it should be in my opinion.

You say Savage has come a long ways. How? Sounds like they still build crappy rifles to me. You got two non functional rifles in a row and are praising Savage? Makes no sense to me!

Rant off! ;D

I just can't figure out why you guys are so upset at savage. I was in a gunshop in my hometown last week, and the owner was logging in two savages in 6.5 creedmore, the in predator max guns. he logged in the first one, put it on the shelf. opened up the second gun, logged it in, then went to put the clip and bolt in it, and guess what? they weren't there. checked the box again, checked the box they were shipped in, both empty. the other owner came over said the ones that came earlier in the week had both bolts in the same gun box (I guess they thought someone may need two bolts), luckily the bolts matched the correct guns, so he checked the other gun box no luck. he called and now has to straighten the whole mess out. the same shop last year got in a order of the new stevens rifles, he had two in 22-250, they had the exact same serial number on them. He asked me how the hell do I log these in? so at least you got a bolt with your gun! I was there to try and trade on one of those 6.5 creedmores, that changed my mind real quick!!

Maybe they should change their name from Savage to Salvage? :)

I thought it was "Salvage Arms"!

For some reason when I imagine their facilities I think of junkyard wars!
I picture them digging through scrap to gather enough parts to put a gun together that hopefully will work! I picture the "Salvage" guys that test the guns crossing their fingers everytime they test a gun, and then "high fiving" each other when it goes off! ;D

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are. Thanks for the giggles. I'll have to pass this on to my buddy so he has some new material for making fun of my Savages.

All the anti above cracks me up I admit, at least I dont have to strap mine down to a bench to shoot small holes in paper......... :)

Considering that Savage has probably sold 20,000 rifles this year, the fact that a few of you have a wise crack or snide comment isn't very important. I have had a Savage 112, two 12 BVSSs, two 12 LPRs and two 12 Target models and a benchrest rifle in 6BR made off a 12 short action. Never had a problem with any one of them. My box-stock Savages have regularly out-shot Coopers, Sakos and Remchesters at our egg shoots. The barrel nut is a no-brainer; pre-chambered barrels can be installed in just minutes, correctly headspaced. The floating bolt head is ingenious; they can be changed quickly to change calibers, they aid the alignment of the lugs. Short of a custom action and hundreds of dollars of gunsmith fees it's the best thing on the market.

Savage factory barrels are the same weak link that all other factory barrels are. I've seen factory Model 700s that had a chamber so out of line with the bore that you could see it with the naked eye. I am at the range several times every week and see guys with Remingtons that won't group 3"; Kimbers that won't put three shots in the same zip code. If you want a decent shooting rifle in the sub-$700 range, Savage is the best show in town. And, of course, in the past few years they have won dozens of F-Class and long-range events over guns costing three times as much. Does a bad one get out now and then? Apparently, but that doesn't negate the thousands that are making shooters happy.

I stated before Savage send me replacement because of the defective model 12 target LRP, my replacement supposed to be LRPV, well the action was correctly selected and barrel was from LRPV, but the chamber in it was cut with rat-tail file and off center with the bore, in the addition my LRPV supposed to have HS precision stock, instead I got laminate where pillars had no contact with action and the channel in the stock was none-concentric with the action itself so barrel was not freefloated, also firing pin was set in such way so it was puncturing primers. This rifle was "checked" for defects and test fired prior to shipping, so go figure...

Let's see if I have this correct;

You buy the most cost effective (Cheapest) rifle on the market, and most of them outshoot MUCH more expensive guns and give years of unremarkable service after being knocked around in the trunk of your car or behind the seat of your pick-up truck. And, once in a GREAT while there is a problem with quality control at Savage. But, Savage usually makes it right?

What's the problem? Do none of you complainers understand statisticla quality control?

Or, are the complaints a rationality for the feeling of being out shot by a "lesser" gun than yours.

I have a Savage 110 in 30-06 that my father-in-law bought in about 1958, roughly when they were introduced. I saw him derided over and over again for his poor choice of weapon. But, everyone learned NOT to shoot off with him. His gun out shot every ones!

I have also built myself a bench rest gun based on a Savage Precision Target action and a Shilen pre-fit barrel housed in a dog tracker stock I bedded myself. I get pleasure in building something like this by myself. I have shot 2200 rounds down the 243WIN barrel and it is time to replace it. I already have a new 6mm barrel and a 6BRX reamer on order, And, a local BR shooter/gunsmith will be asked to chamber it for me.

In the mean time, I have learned from scratch on this rifle and even won a couple local club ribbons at 600 and 1000 yd matches and finished mid pack in a couple 600 and 1000 yd nationals. I am still usually beat by the old 6BR brigade, in fact one guy showed me by shooting my gun at 1000 yd it is still capable of 6" groups. I am the problem!

NO, you will not find me bad mouthing any part of Savage! And, I am lead to wonder why some of you guys complain so bitterly?

I have to agree!

Savages are great for the money you pay!

Maybe the bitterness comes from not being able to afford a BAT Custom Action!

Let's stop the bashing of savage and anything else for the holiday. This thread was started by one guy that had a reason to be upset and as usual it has turned into a mudslinger. Lets let the OP write back with his findings after firing his new rifle. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I am a savage man. I also like Savage guns :-P I own a bone stock .308 10FP that shoots in the .3's with approx 2,500 rounds down bore. And I can work on them my self, and the price is right for parts. I am happy

Just for the record, I was not complaining about Savage rifles, I was just making fun of them! LOL ;D

Happy Thanksgiving guys!

I totally agree! We are here to solve issues! Not to create any!

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL ;)

Happy Thanksgiving guys!

Erik, I was starting to wonder ???

As stated in many threads, Many own tack driving Savages!

I for one have several of them! In fact, I have a custom build I put $4,000 in, I have a $800 Savage (same caliper) that will outshoot it!!!!

Help me figure this one out!

Dennis, I was just having fun!

So, since you asked, let me help you understand. I would not own a Savage, let me tell you why. Guns are a luxury, not a need! The way I look at it, if someone was to ever say "if you could have any gun, what would it be?", the answer will always be, "the gun that I already have!". And I live my life consistent with that principle.

When I drink alcohol (very seldom), I drink what I want, regardless of price. I don't go for the cheapest thing that will get me drunk, do you?

Also, there are women that for under $50.00 will "get the job done", I've never had one of those either! ;D

And that my friend, is why I don't like Savages, or cheap beer, or women of ill repute!

Guys, I hope none of the take this personal, because it's not!

I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, and may all your groups be one hole!

I should have seperated the two comments!

I was making a point that I paid $4k for a custom built 308, and I have a Savage FCP 308 which I bedded and tweaked the trigger! That's it! As of this date!!!!! I have shot a higher 600yd score with the Savage vs my Custom Built! This is why I stated: "Help me figure this one out"

And yes Erik, I know both of us work hard and were able to "afford" Luxuries! Mainly our playtoys!

For a person on a limited budget, Savage is not a bad place to start! There are several who shoot with us that are using Factory Savage rifles and doing good!

To Everyone: Have a Great and Happy Thanksgiving ;D
