Savage actions and a custom build

Not all 12's and 112's were stainless. The number designations came from the intended purposes of the rifles. 12's and 112's came with heavy barrels and were intended for target/varmint use.

Well i just talked him for half an hour. His prices were better than expected and i think ive got most of it figured out. Hes got me pretty much sold on a savage target action, i know what i said before but... and a Kreiger Criterion 30" barrel with a H-S stock. He was saying i should look at a 260 AI instead of a 6.5x284, saying i was going to be getting better barrel life from the 260 with almost the same performance.

Ive been looking around the internet trying to find a h-s stock that would fit a savage target action but coming up blank, wondering if you guys have any pointers there?

How do you think all of this sounds?

Is it a bad thing to tell us what he quoted you on a Savage target action? I'm curious. Hibbing is a drive for me but there's also good coyote hunting up there from what I've heard. Might be worth it.

Boyds fit pretty well from what I've seen and they're cheap. The finish is nice but you'd have to bed the thing but that's easy enough. http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Replacement-Stocks-for-the-Savage-s/4.htm

ETA, oh yeah and yippie to the 260 AI, especially if the rumors are true about Lapua coming out with it in 2011.

Sounds awesome to me. I'm jealous. ;D I like the .260AI better as well. Really good round.
Really sounds like it will be one heck of a rig, especially in .260AI.

Good Luck
Kenny

Another round that I think would be good, though it's not standard, is a 6.5-6mmAI. It would be very similar to a .260AI, but with a longer neck and a bit more capacity. I think it would be great.

No, nothing bad about what he said. His target actions(right handle, left port) were $460. I mentioned having a magazine for some extra rounds and he was quick to say im just going to lose some consistancy and at 600 yards i wouldnt be making that fast of a follow up shot anyways... the more i think about it now the more i would like a magazine though.

By the way Tango hes not in Hibbin its Buffalo, may be less of a drive, and i could point you to a fair amount of public land with coyotes around, hell if you are a better caller than me i might have to drive right to the land with you and do some shooting. :o Bring snowshoes! :o

Here are some stock options for a Savage target action that I'm aware of:

Eliseo S1 tubegun. Have heard nothing but good things about Eliseo.

Any McMillan or Manners can be inlet for a Savage.

A factory stock, like LRH (may in fact be a H-S stock), F-T/R or (recent) Palma models. Maybe Numrich has them.

A stock from Sharpshooter Supply (SSS), they can also bed your action. They are good stocks, I have two LVT stocks from them. However, would I buy another one? No. SSS's downside is they take your money up front, take way longer than promised (any times quoted to you will be meaningless), and are impossible to get a hold of.

A stock from Stockade, which I've heard is slightly better than SSS customer service-wise, but the wait is also very long. Can pay extra to cut in line.

The PRT F-class stock from Savage Doctor, but that's only useful to you if F-class open or long range BR is your game. Good stock, and it came reasonably promptly and when promised. JT is a good guy. I have one for my new project, but of course I'm waiting an eternity for the action to come back from SSS, still not here, months after it was promised to be ready.
Buffalo's a lot closer than Hibbing! If I end up getting one of those actions to build off I'd just do a RBRP single shot action.

I'm a novice at coyote hunting, I really want to try it though because I never have. I'm down give it a try sometime!

There is a reason he was called Wiley Coyote. :-\ ???

Thanks nhm for the info on the stocks im going to take a close look at some of those.

For some reason i just started thinking bigger... what about a 338 Lapua mag.???

Just a toss up in the air. I am already shooting a 223 at 600 yards so if i wanted to be shooting 1000 why not make it seem easy... Just a thought. i know the price of shooting would go up, but would any of this be a valad consideration. Could a savage target action handle a 338 lapua?

Just a thought.

The guys with 7MMs will be beating you up I think.

338 Lapua vs 7MM @ 1000 yards, 10 mph wind:

300 SMK @ 2750 FPS - 276" drop, 50" drift

180 VLD @ 2950 FPS - 251" drop, 53" drift

Recoil of the two in comparison, 22 LB rifles, free recoil energy:

338 Lapua - 21 ft lbs

284 Shehane - 9 ft lbs

I believe you'll need a magnum action for that also.

Wayne

Yeah. I seem to have a soft spot for the 338 lapua ever since i shot a L96 that some guy my buddy knew had, it was only 200 yards but it was fun.

Once i look at the facts i come back to my sences.

Pretty sure that others have built 338 Edge (based upon the 300 RUM case) on the Savage Target actions before. Problem is they will not eject live rounds. You have to pull the bolt to get the rounds out that you do not fire. Not a big deal, but an issue none the less. The large shank on the target action will allow for more meat around the chamber area. Check on the Savage Shooters Forum. I would not like shooting the 338's personally, but some enjoy having their jaws adjusted :) Anything over a 7mm Mag is way more than I want to shoot more than one or twice.

Yeah it was just a thought, i was reading about Mcmillans long range hunter in 338 lapua, for some reason the round always gets my interest even though it is not in my best interest.

The only thing that kreeps into the back of my head is the thought that after i spend all this money i might want something bigger. But i am not going to be hunting anything larger than whitetails with it and i havent rifle hunted for 3 years i use my bow, so i probly wont even hunt with it. And the ballistics of these rounds are just great so i have nothing to worry about.

I still havent found a solid ballistics chart for 260 AI. i would love to see the comparissons with the 260AI and 6.5x284.

I am probably going to complete my upcoming build in 260ai on Savage target action. Joel Russo crafted a stock for me from a blank that I laminated in Bubinga and figured Anigre. 28" Brux or Benchmark barrel with "Muscle" muzzle brake from Center Shot Rifles. I purchased one of Jim See's Muscle Brakes last year and had it installed on a rifle that was a hard recoiler and that I had long since stopped shooting often if at all. Big difference in recoil! I was sold :) I rarely shoot at the local ranges and if I do, I don't bring my braked rifles.

You know I alwys wondered why nobody mentions bubinga,it is a heavy beatiful wood similar to some walnuts and mahoganys.I always thought it would be the ultimate gun wood due to density and stability and weight.Good going McKinneyMike.

I use Osage orange exclusively for carving bows, that wood is tougher than nails. anyone hear of a stock made out of that? Its a beautiful yellow freshly carved and sanded with very fine grit then rubbing all of the wood with a pollished stone. After that it doesnt even feel like wood, it feels more like very smooth stone, like a polished countertop and when you look at it close there is a reflectiveness to it. Amazing wood that make bows that will last several lifetimes if used and cared for properly. The guy i get my osage staves from sells his bows for $1200.

The problem with wood is i get so bummed out scaring it up or getting it wet and what not.

The stock is inlet for a Savage Target Action by Joel. Inlet is perfect in ever way., as is the rest of the stock. Minimal sanding and it will be ready for finishing.

Joel installed an Alex Sitman adjustable cheek piece system.

The stock is a clone of the Manner's MCS-T2.

Joel is my go to source for a custom stock. One of the nicest gentlemen that you will ever deal with in opinion too. Professional, courteous, honest.

Rock Knocker, Osage is as close to stone as about any wood on Earth after it is fully cured. I have seen a chain saw throw sparks trying to cut it once it has seasoned :)

I used to own a figured hardwood lumber business and have dealt with many archers and bow staves. I had a great supplier in Central Illinois that provided us with superb staves from some of the largest Osages I have ever seen, some in excess of 5' in diameter. Awesome sight. Most Osage trees just result in knarly, brushy type trees, but these trees were majestic.

Yes a 5' diameter osage tree would be quite rare. Its said that only arount 1 in 400 osage trees have a trunk or large limb that is long enough, straight enough and doesnt have any knots in it to make a bow with.

And Mike that is a great looking stock.

Thank you. I had meant to have this rifle finished already, but decided to build myself a dedicated reloading room. The room still needs trim installed, but I am going to to go ahead and install my bench so I can start reloading ASAP. I am working on my bench this week. I hope to have the base ready for glue up tomorrow. 18 mortise and tenon joints for the aprons and stretchers have about wore me out this week :)
