Hi guys,
I finally got my new Savage F Class in 6mm BR 1:8 today and snuck a peek down the barrel only to find it dirtier than my rimfire after a two day competition. It was that dirty I couldnt see the rifling.

Any new savage buyers had this problem??

I waited a few months for this rifle and was a bit peeved off to see the barrel that dirty. Waiting on my good bore guide before I jam a patch down there. It has spent 3 months in transit from the States to down under.

Is this normal or should I be shouting from the rooftops??

... get your chamber checked as it wouldnt be the first time ive seen one slightly crooked.

We disected one in 6.5x284 and it needed re chambering, new pillars and glass bedding as well.

Savage rifles are good quality rifles and they have done the right thing making factory available f class/palma rifles, but their quality control isnt great on them. For thier current retail price in aus, I would be getting a stainless SPS remington donor rifle, a new 6mm 8 twist barrel and getting one made up.

From the couple of new savages that I have purchased, two LRPVs and and FT/R, they must shoot them to make sure that they will chamber and go bang. All three were dirty and needed some cleaning.

Yes, the factory test-fires them before sending them out to you... how do you figure they got those bullet holes in the test target that should have came in the case with the gun?

No, they didn't take the time to clean it afterward. If they did, someone would probably gripe about *how* they cleaned it...

I have 2 lrpv's..a 22-250 w/ about 500 shots using ww 748..fowls up still..a bitch to clean..a 6mm br using varget w/ 100 shots..easy to keep clean..the 22-250 started to open up..i used jb..sweets..bore tech 22 cleaner, carbon cutter ) about a good hour latter i got clean patches..had a gs retouch the crown..and it's shooting again..the gs looked at the cleaned barrel and said ' it's rough '..this shoots in the 2's- 3's when i do my part..i believe him that it was rough from the factory..it was all ways hard to clean..take a bore guide.. good rod..oil w/ a patch..push through..screw on a good wire brush..pull slowly Back thru..i'll bet it's tight when you get close to the chamber..if so jb it..also ball powder fowls up faster than stick powder..ww 748 vs varget

Either the poster has to much time on his hands or a very low roof. Just clean the barrel and go shooting.

I have looked at a lot of barrels from new rifles setting on the shelf at gun shops and they all seem to be dirty,savage, remington, winchester). I have a savage LRPV in 22-250 that I bought used and it copper fouls easily but shots really good. Clean your bore, go shoot your new rifle and have a good time!!

Just for the record the rifle did NOT come with a test target and it looked like it has had more than 3-5 shots through it.

Secondly I use this site as I suspect many others do to learn from people who have more experience than I.

I am sorry to the gurus on this site that have NEVER EVER asked a question in there whole life about any subject.

Perhaps some of those who replied had a bit too much time on their hands. If you thought my question was below your far superior intellect you could have just moved to another post rather than provide sarcastic replies.

My roof is obviously far lower than the pedestal that you live on. I sincerley apologise for wasting your valuable time.

My club,in Victoria) bought a 12F in 6mmBR a while back, and I ran it in, but don't remember it being dirty. However companies often change their procedures. What I can tell you is we're very pleased with it. If I owned it however I would take off the butt plate, drill some holes into the butt and insert some lead rods. Its well under F-Open weight, and to me feels too light on the rear bag.

I believe no factory cleans there guns after test firing and prior to shipping. Why you barrel was so dirty, I don't know other than to suspect that they had to shoot and straighten the barrel a lot before it would meet their production schedule.

The good news is that it should shoot well and if it does not, Savage will make it right. I had a fast twist LRPV 223 that had a bad barrel and Savage replaced it in short order. Now it shoots very well.

Let's hope your gun cleans well and shoots great. One item I have used and really like for slightly rough barrels is Remington 40X bore cleaner. It seams to really get the fouling out.
