New Rifle and a short write up

A few of you may remember back in January I was complaining about an AR10 that I had build in 260 rem that I could not get to shoot. 1 year of testing and load development and re testing all turned into a rifle that on a rare occasion would shoot 1/2 moa but most of the time it shot like 2 moa. Well a member on here DCRYDER aka Dave Corbin saw that post of mine and offered me a trade. My 260 rem AR10 for a Savage Dual port PTA built any way I like (within reason). I accepted and we began working on details about my new rifle. I wanted to try the FT/R game and already load for 308 so I thought that would be a good way to go. Ive always been a fan of the 308 Win, and have an M1a and a Savage 10 Tactical both chambered in the same and both shoot extremely well. The barrel would be a 30 in Krieger 1-11 twist LV contour. The stock was a difficult item. The Dual port PTA has a action screw spacing of 3.44, odd indeed. Another member on here, bohunk_85, PM'ed me saying that he had a laminated stock that would fit the 3.44 spacing and the price was right, at $125. An interesting note about the stock is that there is a 1 in wide polymer layer running vertical down the center of the entire stock. All the parts together, Dave Got to work. A few weeks later, a beautiful rifle showed up. Now, I have always needed a scope as low as it can go over the receiver plus a cheek rest, and it was no different with this rifle. So, I ordered some 3/16" kydex off of ebay and bought some threaded inserts and screws and made my own adjustable cheek rest. Cheek weld is perfect now. Last thing I did was to re-finish the scratched used stock, plus my own little flair. The design is an idea I have had for a while, part digital camo part natural laminate grain. The greys in the laminate really make for a great complement to the black digital blocks. The bipod is a Sinclair Tactical and the scope a Sightron 8-36 in weaver low tactical rings that Ive had laying around. This is the first custom bolt rifle I have had and by far the nicest rifle I have ever had. I have done some load development is all and it shoots better than anything I have ever shot. First day out and it posted a .248 3 shot group at 100 yds and then today with the same load a .454 5 shot group. I plan to test the load (155gr palma SMK, 46.5gr Varget, Lapua brass, BR-2 primer) at 200yds the next time I make it to the range. And one of these months I will actually make it to one of my clubs 600yd practice sessions. I have missed every one for the last year due to other obligations. So, here it is my new, best shooting rifle. A huge thanks to Dave Corbin, who did a fantastic job putting this rifle together and who patiently put up with my many e-mails and calls.

Re: New Rifle and a long story

I forgot to mention, Dave figured out why my 260 rem AR10 wouldn't shoot consistently. The chamber whas bored so off concentricity witht he bore that one side of what should have been the throat had rifleing that came all the way back to the case neck. Since he was planning on setting back and rechambering the barrel to 6.5x47 anyways, he didn't have an issue with it and graciously went ahead with the trade.

Thanks for the compliments. Pretty darn good shooting from a bipod. Good luck in the matches, I think you will hold your own just fine!!!!

Nice Rifle, and thank you for the write-up. I've found that when a rifle won't shoot a bore-scope view of barrel or cerrosafe of chamber will show something outrageous. Just like what you found with partly rifled throat.

Nice! 8)
I really like your adjustable cheek rest. I have a stock that needs this treatment, now that I know what to do.

Congrats...sounds like the trade worked perfect for both of you.

I like the stock flare you did.

Thanks guys, cant wait to stretch the legs out on this thing. What do you guys think of the paint job on the stock? Im still a bit undecided on it.

Well, Im several months into ownership of this fine rifle and a few hundred rounds down range. Went to the range yesterday and put 15 shots downrange at 200yds. The following is the result. 1st shot was 2 in left and a touch low, adjusted the scope accordingly and proceeded to put the next 13 into the 10 and X ring. Second to last shot I got lazy and and sent a shot right and high, but followed it up with another X ring shot. The target is a scaled down F-class target. 1" X ring, 2 " 10ring etc. I modified the stock a little bit by adding a bag rider in the back to help it track a bit straighter and I am now using a Sinclair Gen 2 FT/R bipod instead of the Sinclair tactical Bipod. This is by far the most accurate rifle I have ever owned or shot, and I am absolutely happy in every way with this rifle.

From the target he has shown ,it does. And for that cheek rest,it is the lightest easy to set cheekrest on the market. To have an adjustable would have added 250.00 worth of hardware and work to install it which truly isnt necessary. Looks good to me.

That thing screwed to the stock is beyond ugly.!

::)
You dont like my adjustable cheek piece? Thats too bad, it works great! Function before form, my friend. Cost me about $20 to make too.

Ray and John, I appreciate the complements!

Nice rifle. I missed where you said how to make your check rest. Is it home made? Can you tell me what you used? I saw your post on the 1x1x 6 piece of oak for your bag rider.
Thanks
Troy

Troy, my cheek rest is a 3/16" piece of kydex, cut to the shape I wanted. I then put it in th oven on a baking sheet for about 15min at 350. Have your stock in the kitchen with a damp paper towel over the where the cheek rest will go. and when the kydex is soft place it on the stock over the damp paper towel and mold it with you hands. I cools and hardens really fast so you will have to work fast.
The hardware is just two threaded inserts from the hardware store and two Allen head bolts to match. Hope that helps!

I think the whole damn thing is beyond awesome. :).

I agree! and will add that I have a couple of rifles that are not the most beautiful but they are my best shooters! I had a friend tell me how ugly one of my rifles was but when I was hitting everything I shot at he wanted to shoot it and now wants to buy it from me...go figure! LOL :)
