284 Winchester in a short action?

I am considering making my current f-open rifle a switch barrel, right now it's in a straight 6br. I know there is an article in the gun of the week category regarding a short action 284 but that one was a mag fed with light bullets and mag length OAL's. Could it be done with say the 180's or even the 195's and still be able to eject in a cease fire? Really don't want to be that guy that has to take his cheek piece off to take his bolt out to remove a round.

I have been wondering also. There was the article on the board of a tactical shooter with one, mag feeding but only shooting 168amax.

180 grain Berger hybrids would put you at 3.4" with most short action travel at 4" I could see it working. I hadn't found bullet lengths on the other rounds.

You will need to remove get cheek piece. If I can't pull out a 142 in 6.5x284 I don't see any way you're getting a 180 out. I had to pull my bolt when I was shooting 175SMKs in a custom SA.

If you get a Sitman, WTC, etc cheek piece it just pops off and on and doesn't change adjustment. Anschutz style just flop over and also should work.

I have ran into this problem but never had to totally remove the bolt. Just hit the bolt release and slide past the stop and the round would come right out.

I use a Remington 40X single shot, in .284, with SMK 180's loaded .010 off from the lands. It will not feed from a Rem short action magazine, but do not have any problem unloading a unfired round from my 40X.

My heavy gun is a straight 284 WIN and has a short Savage PTA.

Loading and ejecting spent cases is no problem. When I want to remove a chambered cartridge, I must remove the bolt, but this is very seldom and isn't a real problem.

And, yes, I shoot 162 and 180 gr bullets that are pretty long with no problem.

I had a Rem 700 SA in 284 with 180's. It would always eject a loaded round. The problem was fired rounds. The case would pop up hitting the scope rail, then fall back into the action. I would have to hook each case out with my chamber flag, because there wasn't enough port clearance for my finger to flip the case out.
