Bart B., Inwas under the impression that a 1:11 is optimal for anything up to a 190 grain bullet for stabilization and that a 1:12 is ideal for 155 Palmas and 168s.....?

Awesome rifle Mike, that was my pick before my friend built me a long throat 308 Winchester,,, my velocities pretty much match what you have going with yours...

I still have my Remmy 700 30/06 LR shelved for the fall hunt,,, I had a custom 6.5 A-square built off of another Remmy BDL that was a Ought-6... It was called a 6.5 Newton back in the day,,, the American folks want something similar to this so they came up with the 6.5/06 known as the A-square...

I've had a life long run with the 30/06,,, what an thrill to have it amongst us...

Now I get a chance to use the same case for this new cartridge...

The 6.5 A-square is a dream to shoot,,, its built on a 1977 Remington Model 700 BDL in left hand,,, I had my good friend Bob Jury spin me a contour 2.8 stainless steel barrel,,, basically it's 1 mm thicker then a factory Remington sporter barrel...

The walnut wood stock was in immaculate condition,,, so I used it on this build,,, My other good friend R Galloway did the final fitting along with a trigger tech,,, he re-shanked the back of the bolt for a snug fit,,, a larger collar to keep it tight in the action...

That was a old bench rest trick back in the day instead of of ordering a custom PT&G bolt...

I might throw on a Jewel target trigger since there my fav...

I topped it off with a 3-15 Vortex with quick change mounts to a Nikon 3-12 M3,,, the 11.9 lb rifle is a dream to shoot...

I never thought in all of my life time that I'd have a out dated custom cartridge in my hands,,, I call it my down sized 30/06... LOL

I hope I didn't offend anyone with my post since I don't want to take away anything from this awesome thread you started Mike...

I can't wait to dust off my Remmy 30/06 LR this winter... Super fun to shoot...

I'm a big fan of the 30/06 Lapua brass,,, I kept some for my 30/06,,, and neck down 150 of them for my A-square,,, I'll tell you one thing,,, 30/06 Lapua brass necked down to 6.5 deffinatly puts the reloading press to work... Ha

Normally I run it at 100 to 600 meters,,, after hunting season raps up I'm heading out to the Fred Bragg Memorial Shooting Range at Consort Alberta...

We can reach out to 1450 yards out there,,, my 32" 308 F Class rig can just barely pull it off,,, there are 2 iron gongs up there that have flashing indicator lights on them,,, one gong is 12",,, the other is 24"... I like the smaller gong since it allows me to spot the miss shots up there... Ha

Kicking up dirt is the best way to learn...

Any-who,,, I'll tap it kool on my first outting out there in the 695 to 1170 yards,,, then strategize from there...

It is by far the best long distance shooting range I've shot at out of the 7 I've been too in Western Canada... Super friendly folk...

I'm very humbled and hounered to get a chance to part take in Fred's life long dream of true MarksMan ship...

I wish I could of meet the man... There is quit a story behind his accomplishments,,, Fred was a 30/06 M1 shooter,,, very disciplined shooter as well...

The club houners Fred every year with a military cartridge shoot,,, if the cartridge is an approved military cartridge that has been used in combat,,, then your allowed to enter,,, its one of my dream shoots to take part in...

Of course I'll be using my 30/06 Remmy LR with the Jewel trigger... Ha...

Sand bags or sling with free hand,,, no bypods allowed...

I'll post more info on the Northern 30/06 stuff if thats ok with you Mike and the rest of the gang that visits this thread...

$5 a day or $85 per year,,, very adorable in this days age of shooting sports...

About 200 iron silhouettes for the hand gun and 22 rimfire group,,, 40 to 60 main gongs for us full bore shooters,,, there are 60 white 12" gongs on top of that at undisclosed distances as well...

A range finder is a must,,, along with a ballistic chart for quick reference if a person wants to go live... Ha...

Hot barrel shooting is a real eye opener

A few long-time shooters on another hunting forum that I visit switched over to the trusty 30/06 last week,,, both of them came from a long list of rifles they owned over the years... 243'a on up to 378's with ever thing in-between,,, purhaps the time had come for each of them to scale back to the simple stuff in life,,, that was my path 6 years ago...

Don't get me right or wrong,,, at times I miss my 300 and 338 Mags,,, but things in life change,,, for some of us that is...

I started off with a list of 200+ cartridges,,, I slowly dwindle it down to the top 40 of advantages and disadvantage to fit my hunting and shooting hobby...

I needed just enough to get by on the hunting grounds at X distance,,, and enough for long distance iron gong plinking,,, the little bit of extra punch-junk of the 30/06 over the 308 was so close that it was a split of 50/50,,, the only reason that the 30/06 became the cartridge of choice for me was,,, it was my first new rifle I ever owned when I took up hunting back in the mid 70's,,, lots of critters were harvested with that rifle,,, of course bigger and better showed up when the Magnums entered the picture... Ha...

I had a 308 heavy barrel back in the day for hunting as well,,, 5 years of that before I headed into archery only for a long stint,,, then back to rifle as I mentioned...

Any-who,,, these fellows will surely enjoy the good times ahead,,, I'm sure that they will also look back at the days of """when,""" because the past is always part of our future there's nothing wrong with this since or passion,,, wants,,, and needs dictate where we end up at in life,,, again,,, """for some of us that is."""

There are lots of fine cartridges,,, rifles,,, optics and bling out there that helps us make the package we want,,, purhaps this is one of the many reasons for change up or down depending on which side of the fence we're standing behind...

Shooting sports is only a small part of the picture in my life since lots of other outdoor activities also play a role,,, the old school 30/06 brought me back into the game with something extra to add to the mix...

My old friend said that the 30/06 ain't the sharpest pencil in the pack,,, and it ain't the dull-est either,,, its kind of the middle ground between not enough and to much depending on the person...

I spent from 1979 to 1991 bouncing around Europe mostly Germany. All female dogs are identified as "bitch" almost every country in Europe if they speak English when identifying a dog if it is a female they will mention that the dogs breed in German and if it is a bitch before they tell you the name of the dog. So your bias is your prejudice not the mans rifle. You carry your baggage or prison with you every place you go. No one has a problem with the childrens movies "The Black Stallion" do they? I have heard of people doing 190's in a 30-06AI from a 29inch barrel.
