New Rem 700 VS Old Rem 700

I would like someone to explain to me, without the bias and anger towards large corporation and Remington being a sellout blah blah blah, what is the difference between the old and new Remington 700's. I had one I bought in 2006 and had it for 8 yrs and it was the best gun I ever owned. Long story short, I found a factory defect in it, and Remington replaced it with a new Rem 700 in same caliber for free. Other than it looks slightly different than the previous one, it is still a solid rifle and I love it just the same.

Because while not all but some are total junk! I saw a 700 ADL from dicks stamped 30-06 but chambered in 270. Happens more now than before. Also buy a new sps in a magnum caliber, well documented extractor problems on a lot of them

In a shooting forum this large you will always have a few people that have a bad opinion on just about everything. I hunt with 700's and all my prone rifles are 700's. I have had no problems in the field and shoot HM scores at the matches.

i build rifles have now just a couple months short of 40 years . my favorite to work with is rem . what i have found over the last couple of years is the actions i check are running much truer than in the past . for example just did one from the 80's found the bolt hole was off right and left by more than .030 tho.on a new one that i did the same day ran within .002 tho. not saying they don't make some junk. but i think they tightened up the machining process a little or at least the inspection. hope this helps mike

I won't bash Remington 700's - I love them and have a truck load of them. I bought my first (a 722, in 222 Rem) when I was a kid. I still have several 40XBs and XBBRs that were bought in the mid 70's, and my most recent buys were in the mid 2000's - a Sendero SF-II in 264, incredibly smooth and accurate. A 22-250, 700 VSF whose action is nicer and smoother than any custom action I have ever seen.

I have seen Rem 700s in the big box stores (in the $350/400 range) that were rattle loose and God awful :( ... so I cannot say this with authority, but I believe that either there are two levels of quality (two different production lines), or the best actions are selected and diverted for the high end rifles.

Many people on this forum have learned a lot about rifles in the last few years. The 700 rifles have always been built to have a price that most Americans can afford. Now that the people have become more informed the flaws have become more obvious. Several posters that posted above have said that they have many 700s, would they post the same if they cost the $3000 or $4000 that a custom cost to build. Of course not but they still compare them to the expensive custom. Last time I looked a Sako was $1200 it is a better rifle for sure but it cost twice as much. Remington 700s are a good gun for the money, most of us just have seen better guns now and know the difference.

I have seen more issues with insufficient primary extraction (like, none) on newer 700's. Likewise, I have seen more extractor issues on newer 700's in magnum calibers. Apart from these two items, they are at least as good and probably better in most respects. WH

The ac has dropped big time. The rifles are less refined to try and stay competitive in price. If you look at an early 90s 700 compared to a new one now. The difference is huge,

I sold a scope to a guy in new York. he said he worked for Remington for 35 years. he did jobs in many stages of the manufacturing process. I asked him what has happened to remingtons quality. he said they were buying the cheapest raw materials they could find, the quality control was in the toilet and the company was run by non shooters or hunters. it has suffered from the same thing a lot of companies have , upper management with college degrees and no common sence-or experience . but they will show you how to cut the quality and go up on the price.

You are correct to some degree however dead wrong towards the end. Its not upper management with college degrees that have caused quality and cost cutting in nearly every industry across the country. It is you and I, the American consumer that has done this to ourselves. The thing is that most Americans wants lots of so so things instead of a few good ones. Remington and others are just giving us what the majority of consumers are asking for. They want something that goes boom and costs $50 less than what the last guy paid. I few shortcuts doesn't even play into the decision making process. Truth be told the shoppers buddy bought a new gun last week and now to keep up with the Jones's all of his or her buddies have to go out and do the same. Quality to most people is just a recognizable name brand and Remington has that. Just like in the tool world everyone knows of companies like snap-on. Think all of their stuff is great? Think again, they are now selling Chinese tools priced to compete with their names on them so that your average harbor freight shopper can brag to his friends about the snap-on tools in his garage. The gun culture for the majority is no different. We are getting what we asked for, that is all, and by "we" i mean the general public before someone takes personal offence.

Yep eXXon taught the gun industry about marketing.

Remington has to hit a price point, and I'd be suspect of any opinion out of labor in NY regarding company practices after Remington opted to expand in AL rather than NY. You'd get about the same answer you would from a UAW member in Flint.

I've used them for donor actions on 3 rifles. Can't speak to how they shoot out of the box as I don't own any in that configuration.

In 1999 I bought a brand new 700 Classic .17 Rem. The entire barrel exterior was covered with lathe tooling grooves. Looked like a middle school shop project. The bolt handle had casting flash that would give me a paper cut. Oh, and it shot like crap. The gun was embarrassing.
