wallyworld rem 700

Is the wally worlds' $460.00 rem 700 camo action the same as 700 actions of old. The reason I ask is because im looking for a short action, and was checking the one at wally world. It felt cheaper, lighter, and definetly very rough? Not sure if the rough feeling was because of the heavy matte finish or just cheap actions.

Don't know about your rifle but I bought one at Wally-World two years ago. It was a cheap Remmy in 243 with a black synthetic stock. Pulled it apart and now it's a 6BRX living in an Eliseo R-5 kit that shoots "lights out" at 600-1K. Go figure?

When I compared a WalMart Remington model 700 to one at Sportsman Warehouse I concluded they were the same gun. Both were an SPS model and I was not impressed with either. The stainless VSSF model I bought seemed like an completely different action.

hmm i wonder where the differences are, is it where it was manufactured? Finish? Material? Tolerences? They sure seemed cheap and light to me. Im trying to find inexpensive actions to build on. Probably better off looking in the local paper for older 700's for sale.

I've heard of guys building on Wby Vanguard actions. They are inexpensive and basically a 700 clone. In an entry level rifle, my opinion is the Vanguard action is a better fit and finish. I've heard they are metric though as they come from Japan - they are made by Howa.

I bought a cheapo M 700 short action last month at Wall-Mart for $397. It turned into a pretty nice match rifle.

Weatherby actions are not even close to the Remington 700. The Weatherby actions are Japanese Howa actions with a completely different bolt, bottom contour, trigger, safety, etc...........They are both turnbolt actions, that's the only similarity

The whole issue with building a custom gun from an existing action is the availability of BR triggers for that action.

Therefore, if it doesn't take a Remington 700 type trigger, your source for BR triggers is just about nill. The Savage trigger, with lots of work can come close, but they are not a 2oz Jewell..........All other need not apply for true benchrest work.

I have seen a few Howa rifles and they have all shot very well. The stocks are a joke, but the actions are slick with a nice sako/M-16 style extractor. If you go to the link below, you will see many posts from those who seem to really like them, as well as some info from a smith who works on a lot of them and says they are very true and are a great rifle to start with.

Granted the trigger may not be tunable to BR levels, but it can be tuned to 1lb which is acceptable for many other disciplines. And according to a post I read, there may be a CG trigger in the works for the Howa as well.

Roedale precision also makes an AI style chassis for the Howa as well, so an excellent tactical chassis is available to fit the actions. They also have a flat bedding surface and an integral recoil lug, both of which are great additions to a factory action.

If you are interested in using a Howa action for a semi-custom rifle build, read the posts at the link below, especially those by Pete Lincoln. There are a lot of pro's ans con's on the Howa rifles in the thread, very good read for anyone considering one.

Another option for a great low cost action to use for a build is the Stevens 200. They can be had most everywhere for $300-$320 new, and Jim Briggs often sells bare actions for around $200, maybe a bit more. They are essentially a pre-accu-trigger Savage, and come with all the benefits and accuracy of the standard Savage action. I have seen many on the forum that have been built into very nice rifles, and I have one I built as well. Many excellent components are available for them, as well as a few very acceptable triggers, such as the Rifle Basix Sav-2 adjustable from 4oz. to 3lbs, as well as the SSS Evolution which is considered the top-of-the-line Savage trigger.

Kenny,

I'd like to look at that link, I think you forgot to include it.

Thanks

Apparently I did! OOOPS! :P

Sorry about that, I guess I kinda spaced out a bit and forgot the link. Kinda defeats the purpose of most of the post if the link isn't there!

was talking to a gunsmith that stated he liked weatherby and howa actions. This past summer i was at the range next to a guy with a howa m24 clone in .308 I was working up loads with my stock rem 700 varmit. We both fired a string and went down to the hundred yd target. I was expecting to see some good groups from the howa, but I literaly dont think he mangaged to put all the rounds inside of a paper plate at a hundred. Might of been the "nut behind the bolt" what ever it was it takes alot of work to not be able to group inside of a paper plate.

And they are giving away those Howa 1500...............Three of them At Kittery Trading Post in Maine for under $350 and a few Weatherby Vanguards for under $400.............

I got a Wally World R700 Youth 243 and striped the stock and barrel. I had it trued, but the smith said it took very little work to clean it up. I liked the rough look since I was shoving it in a tube gun anyway. Always been a good shooter. Lots of parts for remmy's and there a lot less.

There's good bottom metal and triggers for M70's now too.
