New Question, Russian primers

I've read here alot of guys are using Wolf primers and wonder why.

Is it a supply issue?

Are they that much better than CCI BR or Federal Match or any of the American made primers?

Are they a "softer" primer? I know some of my most accurate loads in my 45-90 and 45-70 use remington large pistol primers because they're soft and don't up-set the powder charge as much.

Thanks in advance,

I switched form FED 205m to the Wolf SRM for 3 reasons.

1. My SD and ES numbers shrank (got my SD's in the single digits)
2. Cost (right now if you can find FED they are $37 and the wolf are $27)
3. The space on the shelf is less than 1/2 (and when I buy 10,000 at a time, it's nice to have less space taken on my shelf).

I shoot them in my 6br with light loads, in my 6 br with heavy loads, in my 30br's, and in my 204's. I have not tried them in others, but that’s just because I have not gotten around to doing it, or it doesn't matter as the other guns are hunting rifles, and I just need to shoot 1" groups in those guns to be effective for their purpose.

Actually, it's quite the opposite in my experience. Whereas I was piercing Federal 205M primers, I switched to Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers and have no pierced primers with the same load (6BRX). The lore is that they were made for Russian guns, which have (sledge)hammers and firing pins!

Price and availability were why I bought some, but I was really impressed with my first test. In my .223 velocity went up, and SD/ED went down with no other changes. I figured if the Wolf were no good, they would be good enough for over the course and hunting so I could save the Fed's for the accuracy stuff. Now I have decided I will go the other way.

I have switched over to Wolf SRM primers totally for my guns. Reason is that they have a much smaller ES/SD and they seem to shoot more accurately. As a nice thing also, they seem to be just a bit larger and this is a good thing when loading cases that have been shot a lot with max loads. Be sure to seat them firmly due to this slightly larger size.

One thing though - get the SR Magnum primers as the standard SR primers ae way too soft.

What every one is saying is the best reason to try them...
I have no problem with them at all, as as long as they out preform all the others I'll keep right on using them even if the prices go up.......
They are not soft at all if your using the Magnums...

I love em but have known a few people to have problems with them, usualy with miss fires. It seems to depend on your firing pin/spring combo. They work well with all mine though.
I got mine cheap from people who wanted to get rid of theirs. :) :)
