New NF Competition scope, has anyone used it yet?

I was looking at the new NF Competition scope, kinda got turneoff abit
because of no published reviews AND it is second focal plane reticle.
Any opinions? I use two NF 12-42 56 BR scopes and they seem to be
just fine for 300, 600 & 1k yds.

Donovan, First, i compair it to a NXS not a BR model, i had one of those also and sold it. The eye relief on the comp.is short and very critical, The power is over rated, image size has to be around 50 to equal the NXS at 42. It is not as bright as the NXS,clarity is close to the NXS. The comp. shoots as good as the NXS but 5 mins. per rev. is a pain and you can get lost in high wind. The only true advantage is 6 oz. over the NXS. Tested it at a hundred and at 1000 sold it after that,it is not as good as the NXS for long range, and had no problem with the dot, most was eye relief so you pay $400- 500 more for less.....jim

Don't feel it is a good comparison to the NXS, reason being the Competition is like the BR model in its 1/8th clicks. The vast majority of NXS's are 1/4 click, I personally find this a big deal when fine tuning to the X ring in F-Class. The side focus is nice and that is comparable to the NXS.

I also owned a Competition scope and just sold it today. I found many more plus's that negatives with this scope. The 55 power is usable but not across a full day of shooting. In the early relays that 55 power is a nice thing to have, as the day and the mirage increase I did have to dial down some. Of course the 1/8 click is a plus I think. The eye relief is not a problem as a verify my position on the stock for each shot.

For me it was the reticle. I want to know exactly were the rifle is aiming at all times when target shooting especially at a 1,000 yds, any dot for me is just too big and obstructs to much of the target. I understand fully that many shoot the dot, for me it is a problem. With the DDR reticle on my Competition scope there are two cross hairs in between the two dots and I was using the top cross hair directly below the aiming dot. This cost me a point as in the heat of competition while sighted in on this cross hair I found myself constantly aiming with the centered dot, caught myself all but one time and that was enough for me. The dot thing was the one really negative I found.

Maybe Nighforce will offer more reticles in the future, when they do the competition scope will be the guy to beat.

I feel it is a good comparison with the NXS, mine are all 1/8 min. Side focus to side focus,1/8 min. dot to 1/8 min. dot. I can see the target through recoil with the NXS but it's not the case with the comp. it disappears like you turn the switch off... No the comp. isn't even in the game for what i do, and to try to use it at the high power it pulls on my 70 year old eyes. The big dot is what i like to tell it from the floaters. The NXS is far superior optics wise and movement, except for the weight....... jim

I would have to disagree with Jim. I have a BR, NXS, and a Competition. I think the Competition is by far superior to the NXS. The glass quality of the competition blows away the NXS.

Nightfoce is also working on 10 MOA rev turns for the comp.

The only complaint I have about the Competition is the Reticle, however Nightforce is working hard on a couple new reticles and also reducing the size of the dot on the DDR.

It sounds like the old story that the BR. model had better glass than the NXS. The same glass was used in both according to NF. I believe dropping the NXS 12-42 was a marketing thing, two scopes too close in price. While the BR. is at the low end and the comp. at the top. Maybe my NXS's are better than most and the comp. was a bad one. The problem with the short and critical i relief will not change and it doesn't lend it's self to fast recovery with free recoil....... jim

How about a nice clean crosshair? Or something like the old CH-3. I loved that recticle.

I looked through a bud's Competition this past weekend at a local match. Nice glass. I have an NXS and a BR. The competition did look a little brighter and was more sensitive to eye relief.

Tom, Why is there one less piece of glass? Maybe i have good ones but the new comp. not equal to them at 1K. I sold my BR. model because of the eye relief and setting the parallax. The com. is just too critical for free recoil, you almost have to pin the gun to see out of it or the lights go out when you shoot. ..... jim

Tom, The power is over rated, but it didn't make difference on the eye relief. I have to come out of the gun to see the flags with just one eye so it is really hard to find the full field of view. It's full or nothing,it just killed me on the light gun, you don't have time to be searching. So when i got home it was off that night........ jim

I agree, eye relief is a huge disappointment. I got used to it, but definitely not as forgiving as the NXS. Glass between the Comp and NXS, I could not see any difference. Both top notch. The DDR reticle, I have no issues with precision shooting at 100 yards to 1K. I actually like it, so preference thing. The non locking eye piece is silly...I still don't understand that one. I like the dust covers, LOL. I also like the silver/black look, lol.

If it wasn't for the weight, I would go back to the NXS. If anyone has a NIB 12-42 NXS, NP-2DD, .125 clicks, I might be persuaded to work out a trade!

Tom, No, i use the little stickers to repair the the holes on note book paper. I have a huge marker and i make them black and stick them on the back of cut down 1K targets for load testing at 100 yds. I set two of my light guns side by side and looked through both and made the image size the same to my eye. Not the dots but size of the aiming point, and the comp. was up around 50 power while the NXS was at 42. Was the comp. clearer.... No, is the power over rated .... Yes. Took the comp. to 1K, ran it up to max. and it pulled on my eyes afar a while. Like i said i could live with it, if they would fix the short and critical eye relief and change the knobs from 5 min. to 10min. I had no problem with the recital........ jim
