1000 yd Scope Advice

Blaster-37

1000 Yard
I am considering a new scope and do not want to waste glass money.
I have used the NF NXS 12-42 2DD effectively for many years now. For a new build, I am considering a new NF BR 12-42 with the CH3 reticle. My thoughts are for more wind condition/ mirage viewing and a finer center dot on a 1000 yd target. 1/8 MOA clicks would also help on set up.
Has anybody used the CH3 reticle for 600-1000 yd. competition and why has NF discontinued the reticle?
Thanx for your 600- 1000 yd. advice, (I am not interested in point blank openions, no offence.)
Greg

I recently bought a 12-42 NXS with R1 reticle. This scope is intended for F-Class competition. My previous NF and Sightron scopes have fine crosshair reticles. When conditions are reasonable, the FCH works well and windage can be managed by target rings. When mirage is heavy (a common problem in San Diego), I often cannot see the scoring rings to estimate hold. My solution is to use the reticle hash marks and try to hold in the center of the shimmering, black blob that the target resembles. The ticks are 2 MOA at the 22X reference magnification. That is about the lowest power I have been forced to use in matches. They represent ~1.5 MOA at 30X, where I usually shoot, and ~1 MOA at 42X. The numbers are not precise but close enough when the aiming point is so indefinite.

Steve,
Thanx. I have tried the bottom dot on my 2DD to open up my mirage field but lost much mid range view at several ranges. The reasons for the dot in the CH3 thought are sometimes I need to focus at 500 yds for applicable mirage and may loose the fine crosshair on the target. I was hoping the fine dot might be easier to find "that dancing black blob" at the 1000 yd. target in those conditions.
I could sure be wrong and that is why I am asking you guys.

I just finished building a 1000 yard rifle for F-Class "Open"... I JUST switched to a NightForce BR 12-42 using the CH3 crosshair... That crosshair will give you the edge "out yonder" because it is so very precise! I USED to have a NightForce 12-42 NXS>>>I found that it did not have the "superior glass" that the BR models have... I have NOT been able to figure that one out as the NXS is 500 bucks MORE>>>Yet there is NO DOUBT of the difference in clarity! You will LOVE the CH3>>AND the BR Model!!

Side Focus and more elevation travel are its key differences. Think they use different glass between the two? Why would they? ???

Had both, and now only the NXS and can not see any diff. at 1K just got tired of getting hit with short eye relief on the BR. .....jim

Thanx guys.
I will use the BR CH3 on my dasher and put the old NXS 2DD on my wind gun. I was mainly concerned about the CH3 reticle. I have been looking at it for years now, especially after those heavy mirage days or tough wind situations when you try to scan every possible indicator through the junk in the reticle.
Bottom line, has anybody had any problems with the CH3 reticle?
Greg

I use the CH-3 reticle for 100, 300, & 500 yard earth-pig matches. You are correct about the "precise" aiming point. I don't know why NF has discontinued the CH-3 reticles. As far as I'm concerned, the value of my NF BR's with the CH-3 has just gone up.
