New Lathe

Fluid film is excellent stuff, but plan on giving everything a full bath in a parts washer to clean it off.

I ordered some fogging oil.

Thinking about trying this stuff also

If I coat the parts can I put them in a box wrapped in shrink wrap?
I am sure you'll find that it works well. I've used it for decades to preserve all kinds of parts and tools.
Shrink wrap? yeah probably fine. I'd throw in a little desiccant bag just for good measure.

Personally, I would not use shrink wrap for fear of trapping moisture or condensation. A cardboard box with some air flow would be my first choice. Nice lathe.
Yep. When we store race engine components (cranks, rods, cams, etc), they go into cardboard boxes with VCI paper. I bought a pair of N.O.S. '64 409/425 bare cylinder head castings still in the original boxes and wrapped in 1964 vintage VCI paper. When I opened them, they looked like they had just come off the truck from G.M. :)

Good shootin' -Al

Here is my new lathe I just picked up yesterday. It is an Acer 1440E Taiwanese. It has a Newall DRO and a Mitsubishi VFD.

It is a 1998 two owner. It was only used for chambering. It was originally owned by two different gunsmiths that are pretty well known. It is absolutely cherry and shockingly clean. It's the exact perfect size that I wantView attachment 1456719View attachment 1456720View attachment 1456721
What diameter is the spindle and how far is it from one end to the other ?
Looks like a nice lathe.

Acer lathes are great, except for a few things
Communication through telephone with them is difficult (they are hard to understand)
The compound on mine is held down by two t-nuts, one of which you can’t tighten at the 30 degree mark.
The angle marks on the compound were also off
Other than that I can’t measure spindle runout
Here’s how I fixed my compound on both sides image.jpg

You can fix the issue with the 30° compound tightening (I had same issue on my PM 1440gt), by making larger T-nuts, and making the entrance hole for them on the bottom of the cross slide, where it should have been in the first place. Annoying that it needs to be done, but a pretty easy fix.

Thanks for cleaning her off before you took the pic. Mine never looks like that!
