New lathe due diligence.

What kind of chuck mount is on your lathe? For sure don't give up on your journey doing your own work

Are you thinking about making a spider out of the plate buy just drilling and threading the plate or adding a new peace to the plate that is tapped with four addusting screws

Adding a plate to the backplate off the chuck. I was going to make the spiders for both the inboard to fit the backplate and the outboard to slip over the back of the spindle. I haven't looked at what's commercially available yet.

I don't believe you'll find a inboard spider with that mount commercially. What your thinking is what I'd do. Sounds like a good project. Nothing wrong with using a four jaw chuck if your head stock is short enough ether.

When attaching an outboard spider onto the spindle I'm thinking that the best method is to machine it to a tight slip fit and four brass tipped screws to hold it.

"it" I'm assuming is the spindle and not the barrel. I personally would skip the brass tips if it's for the spindle. And use only two screws, one 90 degrees from the other.

Glad you're not letting the naysayers stop you. Hope you enjoy the Lathe and good luck.

To the the members who are soooo worried about my safety I want you to know how much I really don't need you to wear your wife's panties and act like my mother. Really , beat it to another thread and worry about yourselves.

I don't normally respond to stuff like this, but...

As a long time tool and die maker/machinist I remember looking around at my coworkers when I was younger. There were three categories of folks, generally;

1. The really lucky ones who had only scars from being stupid around machinery (myself included)

2. The moderately lucky ones who were missing digits or parts of digits

3. The ones who based on appearance were lucky to be alive

I have tried hard to not become like group 2 or 3 over the years, and have been largely successful (so far).

Lathes and milling machines, like tractor PTO's, don't give a crap about how smart you think you are and will do their best to hurt you if you suffer one moment of inattention.

One final before I leave -don't put your fingers where you wouldn't put your you know what...

Frank (the still ten-fingered :-) )

Maybe I wasn't clear. I've had more than my share of professional safety training during my eight years in the US Navy as a UT. All the power tools in the UT shop , Builders shop , ditch witches to trac hoes. Forklift to to hazmat. Then on to working in construction trades and now driving a tractor for a living.
So what the SBMF trolls like Billlarson and hogpatrol have accomplished is that I now get most of my answers by PM. There are some really great members who offer priceless information but unfortunately for any other members other than myself it's not shared because they just don't want to deal with the douche bags. Great job cellar dwellers !

Forgot to add gmac to the troll list. Sorry I forgot you. I specially asked you earlier to see your way out of this thread as you have nothing to offer.

Sticks , stones , lathes and mills will hurt me , names , not so much .
Don't even know what a troll is . It must be ,and older retired riflesmith that does know how to accomplish a task without being maimed or maiming anyone else .

Pretty soon you'll be answering your own questions. Oh wait , you do that already !
You say that like it's a good thing ! Fortunately there are mostly great members and the shriveled old bitter impotent group you belong to are few. I'm getting every question answered and more. I had run into the Billlarson troll on another thread where he was going on about hand loads and how stupid and unsafe was when the OP had stated he had used factory ammo. You bitter guys sitting around trolling while you wait to die are sad.
