New lathe due diligence.

If you insist for some reason on using a outboard spider, I would make it snug/slip fit and tap 1 small hole for a set screw to hold it on spindle, that's all you need.
Myself, I don't use a outboard spider. Thats a whole other subject.

You cannot learn to fly a plane, learn to roller skate or ride a bike by reading a book or watching a safety training video. Running a lathe is the same way.
I have operated all the equipment that you have watched videos of plus a lot more.
I have ran dozens of lathes and VTLs from 6" to 60" with beds up to 21 feet. I started driving a farm tractor at 13 more than 50 years ago.
I think your attitude is going to get you hurt. Things happen much faster than you can blink when you screw up on a lathe. Now tell all of us how you never wrecked a bicycle.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I've had more than my share of professional safety training during my eight years in the US Navy as a UT. All the power tools in the UT shop , Builders shop , ditch witches to trac hoes. Forklift to to hazmat. Then on to working in construction trades and now driving a tractor for a living.
So what the SBMF trolls like Billlarson and hogpatrol have accomplished is that I now get most of my answers by PM. There are some really great members who offer priceless information but unfortunately for any other members other than myself it's not shared because they just don't want to deal with the douche bags. Great job cellar dwellers !
