Lathe

Are the Grizzly lathes good precision lathes. How short a barrel can you use and still use the centering fingers in the headstock.

Are the Grizzly lathes a good precision lathe?

I have a G4003G.
With out sounding like I'm bashing Grizzly because I'm not, the answer is No.
They are not "good precision lathes" My definition of "good" is solid, heavy castings, built to last and withstand years of use. The grizzly line is not what I would call "good". As far as precision, it's accurate enough. But not being build very solid limits it's use to small jobs. The 4003 was $3000 brand new. You don't buy much for $3000. How ever, they are an ok $3000 lathe. Don't abuse it and keep it confined to small work and it will last a while. I don't know how else to put it.

As far as how short a barrel. If I use the spider and stock 4jaw, a 24" barrel is about as short as I'd like with out being short on length. That's not to say a setup couldnt be made to get you down to 20" or so if you use a faceplate and spiders on both ends.
