Headstock bearing oil can be any non-detergent oil. Way oil can be the same thickened with STP oil treatment

Gear oil may be too viscous. And the problem with industrial supply housed is they usually sell their oils in 5 gal drums. For an occasionally used lathe this is a decade supply.

not counting the normal wear and tear. You're gonna have a large time! !

Guys with flat belt machines. Do the belts stretch much ? I took some measurements and 40.5" puts it dead center of it's range. If a new synthetic endless belt will stretch a little then I'm guessing 40.25" but if not then 40.5"

My leather belt hasnt seemed to stretch since the 60's. On one machine i put a new belt on with the gator jaws and pin thru it

It's $39.70 with S&H which I think is a little steep. I'm most likely going to have to buy it but I'm not there yet .

Let me guess,,,, phone, no computer (downloaded its $25!) ! If you think $39.70 is "steep", you'd best sell what you've got and move on , as it only gets more expensive from here on out......

That lathe is built almost like the South Bend's I learned on in trade school 20+yrs ago.

On the belt you had in question i would get a hold of Al Bino at flat drive belts 610-670-1603. I would replace the leather belt with one of his rubber flat drive belts. You won't regret it they work great. it comes with the glue kit and the belt is taper spliced at the glue joint. Quiet and smooth. Bill

Thanks for the information ! I've been busy with work but I soaked the slides with PB Blaster and got them moving. I should have a short day today at work so I plan to start cleaning it up and see what I have and what neeeds done. I'll get some things ordered and work on leveling the bench. I don't have power where I put it so I need to run a line down that wall and put an outlet there and better lighting. A couple lights above it will help a lot with the work. Without a load of any kind there is some bearing noise but turn it with the old belt and it goes away so I'm hopeful that a cleaning and fresh grease will save the day. If the bearings are good nothing else is trashed. I'm looking into a class with Richard King on lathe rebuilding and scraping. I'm shopping ebay for some used measuring tools but Iit still looks like a small fortune.

Clean , clean , clean , lube , lube , lube and start again . I have been cleaning and lubing for hours now and everything moves freely . Did the quick tighten the apron screw test and it did get tighter as I backed away from the head but it went all the way so the bed isn't trashed but there is some wear. Bearings seem quiet and smooth with some fresh oil on everything so I'm feeling a bit more confident about them. I'm about to order the manual and a new flat belt so I can power it up. The only worn gear I see is the thread dial and it's not terrible.
I ued the gallon of Lucas synthetic 75w-90w gear oil as it's what I had but I need to order some actual way and gear oil before I put it under a load.

Theres a dude on ebay that sells smaller quantities of the oils so youre not stuck with a 10yr supply

Thanks , I'll check it out. Leveling this is going to be interesting ! Floors not level and there are no leveling screw feet on the bench and the top is butchers block that is coming apart and warped a little and I don't see built in leveling feet on the lathe. I guess I'll have to take the lathe back off and rebuild the bench with adjustable feet and a new piece of 2" wood. Then with the manual in hand see how I'm supposed to level the lathe itself. Thanks for all the help with sources and athe advice.

I would n't bother to repair a wood bench top, I'd replace it with something uneffected by moisture/humidity. Ya' don't have any of that in FL., do you?
