'new' iron sight only AR class

CMP Games 2019 rules finally include the Unlimited Modern Military class that has been shot for a couple of years.

Part of this is making 'Standard' Modern Military irons only and pushing 4.5x scopes to Unlimited.
The iron sighted rifle has to weigh 7.5# or less. That seems pretty challenging to me.

Unlimited isn't very unlimited. 4.5# trigger and 4.5x scope. Basically a place for Service Rifles to shoot in Games.

I'm hoping this makes someone happy 'cause it sucks for me.
I was going to shoot my first standard Modern Military tomorrow and today the rifle is obsolete!

Shoot anyway. Scores with scopes are up somewhat but it is still a trigger game to be sure. I still see irons on the line (besides mine).

Restricting it to irons but allowing float tubes and rails won’t help the issue of scores being too high. I don’t understand the reasoning behind legalizing free floating.

I did.
I'm sure I helped bring average scores down! ( 245 of 300 )
At least I finally shot an official sling match to add to a couple years of f-class and I know I'm not switching my main focus anyway.

Now I have to decide what to do under the new rules even though for a few fun matches a year it doesn't make much difference.

Yeah, I was shocked to see that. Kind of a slap to everybody who actually complied with the existing rules for no compelling reason.

I guess inclusiveness would be the reason but how many people have a 7.5# iron sight rifle laying around they just might want to take to a match? I would think there are a fair number of lightweight free-floats around now but almost all are set up with dots or scopes.

7.5lbs seems fairly bare bones for a NMAR15. My NMA2 without lead in the stock is just about 10-11lbs (14lbs leaded), between the Hbar, free float with drop in hand guards, A2 upper, etc. I have a hard time seeing anything other than an A1 pencil barrel clone or an M4 making weight.

I kinda think that's where they were headed. Even more folks might shoot the games matches.

Play with an AR that’s not floated and you’ll get the drift pretty quickly. It’s a whole different world, and one in which the sling becomes more of a hinderence than an asset to your shooting. The development of the float tube was one of the essential steps in converting the M16 f more a combat weapon into a Service Rifle that could compete on equal terms with the M14s that ruled that particular world at the time. It was an uphill battle, and required the development of suitable bullets, the A2 rear sights (as well as the upgrades that made them truly reliable Match sights, and ultimately a better trigger. But shooting a standard barrel (issue profile) in an unfloated rifle is an exercise in frustration.

And I don't really want to use a carbine sight radius in an iron-only match.

I have a non-floated A2 that I have been shooting in MM for a couple of years. Weighs 7 lb 12 oz. Not too difficult to shoot high X cleans with it on a SR @ 200 yards. Been 100-10X more than a few times. It boils down to position repeatability.

Click 2.5 min left for standing though.

The SR is a big target to be belly shooting at.

Yeah, given the size of the SR target and what a lot of folks can do with a SR at 600 or a reduced 600 at 200 it seems like 100-100 in MM prone-prone rapid would be ordinary.

Personally my scores on MM are a lot better(less crappy) than SR.

But looking at internet score from Perry and regionals and local scores it doesn't seem to work that way. I see some 100s at the top but most well below. Overall the prone MM scores don't look that much better than Service.

Much bigger shooter talent drop-off even at nationals?

Non free float?

Lighter rifles?

edit-another factor is that SR scores at Perry are so good that there isn't all that much room for MM scores to be better.
