New Hornady Priming Tool - bench mount, looks familiar

There's a thing. I'm still hopeful of seeing the Lyman one that I ordered months ago. oh and trying the Aeromax 105's, which for some reason are apparently not going to be available in NZ. (rumour only!)

IMO - The only feature different is the "revolving" primer feed system. The system still holds the cartridge case in a shell holder, which is susceptible to case rim thickness - lack of consistency. I had the Hornady Handheld Priming Tool that would only work with Hornady shell holders. I wonder if this one is the same.

No doubt it's a decent tool, not sure it's worth what they want for it. Being as configurable as it is looks nice, not a huge item to have on the bench. Not sure about the leverage factor on it, they say its a cam lobe setup. They do provide some type of insert or sleeve to adapt to the .270 sized shellholders as well. Not sure I like the depth adj setup, on the base as a stop for the lever, turn with allen wrench, it'll work, but, may be pesky to reset for repeatability. We've seen the Lyman, now this, must be RCBS's and Forster's turn to upgrade theirs, RCBS would maybe be some work or a total redesign,, Forster is easy enough to fix up. Being as I have a Derraco, can't see any special reason to go to the Hornady. Lyman may be the one for most good features pricewise, have to wait til more of those get out there and see what folks like/dislike about them.

Derraco user also. I'm totally satisfied and don't have a reason to change.

Well,,, I struggle with the idea that all this fancy priming gear significantly improves group size. Lee wackamole used a punch and hammer and... believe it or not it still works.

Not long purchased a Lee ram Prime,,, very happy. Yep its slow, but it works just fine.

I own the Derraco and really like the system. My arthritic hands don't hurt as much and depth using "nutcracker-style" tools had depths all over the place. Had discussion with company rep/owner(?) about modification to make it, unlike the others, whereas it would not be rim-thickness dependent (don't like sorting cases). POC was honest, forthright, and patient - nice guy. Also, informed the micrometer is not a linear regarding primer seating depth. Mutual agreement - upgrade mod or new engineering/development not cost justifiable. I even contacted a machinist (?) to make the upgrade for myself.

Derraco setup is easy, it's fast, and I can really go through a lot of cases. I found the repeatable setting(s), per caliber, to insert primers flush, or a little deeper. As an additional step, I bought the new Lyman Accu-Prime Manual Bench Priming Tool $60, which I use to set primers to .003" deep. Very consistent, doesn't care about rim thickness. Yes, it's slow for installing primers one-by-one but I'm not doing that.

Stupid - maybe. But it works for me. I also use my old Pacific/Hornady press (circa early 1980's) to decap primers with RCBS Universal Decapping Die. Keeps my expensive sizing dies cleaner longer. It's also an extra step.

When you're retired and have all this time on your hands...
