Question re bench mounted priming tools..

Originally asked this at benchrest.com, no response since they pretty much all prime one at a time.

I need a priming tool for "semi-precision" reloading, that is faster than using a Sinclair or K&M tool, where I'm doing batches of 50 or 100 at a time for high-power etc loads. Have a Lee hand held priming tool but don't want to go in that direction.

Bought a RCBS bench-mounted tool which was completely useless, didn't work and seemed very low quality. Now I see Forster/Bonanza has a bench-mounted priming tool - does anybody on the forum have any experience with this or similar tools?

thanks in advance for any advice

Tim

I've got the RCBS with the tubes, and I like the way it works. It still gives me some feel like my K&M, but is way faster. I haven't been able to tell the difference in shooting, so I find myself using the bench model more and more.

This probably isn't the direction you want to go but my partner press,RCBS) has the tool built right in and that's pretty much the only thing I use the press for. One-at-a-time, yes. Lots of leverage = no pain in the hands from squeezing a small tool and using just two fingers wrapped around the "C" press and my thumb hooked around the ram handle, it has excellent feel to it. You should be able to get a used partner press for cheap. -Rod-

thanks everybody

the one I bought is the rcbs where the tube flops around and sprays primers on the floor, etc. maybe they have had different production runs over the years b/c mine isn't even close to functional.

all the replies were invaluable,

best regards,

Tim

Might be worth it to call RCBS. I snapped the rear mounting 'ear' off a Partner press and they replaced it no questions asked. They seem to have pretty good customer service; hopefully they can help you get it working right, assuming it isn't just a lemon) or else replace it.

Good luck,

Monte

I’ve owned one. I’ve read some do this. Mine worked as expected. Sorry about the necrothread!

Mine never did that. How close if the fit of the primer tubes with the unit? If it is too loose, you might try to reduce the clearance. Tape or heat shrink tubing on the end that enters the pivoting portion that sets the primer for seating is worth a try.

From what I have heard, RCBS customer service has changed significantly in the recent past from what everyone was used to. But I still think a call is worth the time it takes.

There are a number of fellows who have really liked their RCBS bench mounted priming tools. I suspect that a call to RCBS would resolve your problem. If parts are needed they will be free including shipping. This is how it should work. The tubes are a common feature of priming systems that has been around for decades, used by several manufacturers.
How it works for everyone that I know that uses one:
