New 6XC build done w/range report

So my friend started building rifles...just for friends and family for now...and I wanted a new rifle so I gathered all the parts and went over and "helped" (mostly as chief gofer) him build my new 1000 yard rifle.

I went with a Surgeon 591 action, not the BAT you see in the first picture. Barrel is a Bartlein 5R with a 1:7.5 twist. Chassis/stock is a JP MOR-07. Jewell trigger. And we used a PTG reamer and go/no-go gauges.

I really wanted something a bit different...and a repeater...something that can hold its own in a 600 and 1000 yard bench rest match or F-class Unlimited. Or could be used for tactical shoots (though it is a bit heavy to run around with). And lastly I can take it to the wide open places I hunt coyotes and use as a long range yote buster shooting from a static location.

Once everything was together I shipped the barreled action off to Surgeon Rifles to have it Cerakoted in flat black. I felt this offset the OD chassis nicely. And a plug for Surgeon...I am a bit impatient at times....and this was no exception. I sent the barreled action out on a Monday via FedEx and had it back on Wednesday!! That is turn around time.

A word about the chassis....JP sells it as a drop in fit for SA Remington actions. Even though the Surgeon 591 is a SA "footprint", they was some work that was needed for the action to fit into the chassis.
First the bolt release is on the left side and so the chassis had to be notched for clearance. And then the Jewell trigger's safety was hanging up so back into the mill to make some room for it. And last, the bolt handle is round and would not close all the way so that area of the chassis had to be opened up a bit. Not that big of a deal but worth mentioning for those who might be interested in using the chassis.

Overall I really like the chassis. No bedding required and it is very solid. Ergonomics are much like your trust AR-15. And it uses "standard" AI 5 and 10 round mags. Oh...and the 6XC feeds flawlessly from the mags.

So...now that is all together...time to hit the range. I grabbed 25 pieces of Norma brass. Chamfered the mouths and that was my extent of case prep. Primed it with Wolf LR primes and made up five shot loads using 38.5, 39.0,39.3,and 39.5 grains of H4350. Topped them off with 107gr. SMK's and seated in the lands.

I fire exactly TWO rounds to get my zero at 100 yards. Now we are off and running. As you can see...it looks like it is gonna shoot. The 39.5 grain load opened up a bit, but I am not ruling it out till I try it a little further out.
My next trip will have better prepped brass and I will be shooting at 300 yards. I am hoping to have it ready by our next 1000 yard shoot in a few weeks.

Here are some pics from start to finish.

Take care,Stan

Stan,
Awesome,no brass prep,no barrel breakin, just build and shoot, Looks like the biggest group is well under 1/2". I think your going to have a shooter, looks great also.Keep us updated on your next outing w/it.
Wayne.

Stan, that rifle looks great and shoots just as good as it looks! 38.5 gr. H4350 is a fairly normal load among 6XC shooters, you're right in the zone with that one. Enjoy the rifle!

A VERY sharp lookin' rig you have there. What reticle / dot do you have in the Nightforce?

Keep us posted on how it does. WD

Thanks gents. It has been very fun and rewarding building ones own rifle.

The NF scope has the NP-R1 currently. This is the scope off my Surgeon Scalpel .243 rifle. I borrowed it while I wait for a new NF. The new scope will have the NP-2D ret.

Take care,Stan
