New 6 GT barrel need opinions

Getting a new Brux in 6 GT soon. I am going to break from my normal and try node testing. I normally test @ 100 yds and I am limited to 300 yds. Soooo what distance would be get the best results? After break in of course. What say ye? Thanks for any feedback.

The farthest distance you can shoot will give you the most feedback. Your plan to do your initial load work up at 100 is pretty standard, and you’ll see your efforts at 100 more clearly the farther out you go.

mdram’s loading is a popular one, but one should always work up to what shoots best in their rig. There’s a fair amount of load data out there on the 6mm GT and it keeps growing. I feel it’s a great cartridge, and think you’ll enjoy it.

My 28” Brux with a BRDX (similar to a 6 BRA) shot great immediately.

I put a few wet patches through the barrel for the first dozen rounds. Then loaded 103s .007“ into lands (past first touch). We then used a Varget load that had shot 2950 fps in a similar 6 BRA rifle. It chron’d very similar and put 2 shots in one hole at 50 yards. We then loaded 8 more and moved to 100 yards. That yielded two 4-shot groups, both in the high ones.

I then used the same load at 600-yard match with success. Bullets were pre-sorted by base to ogive.

You have a different cartridge, and your discipline may not allow loading into the lands. But all my best barrels have shot well immediately. I have to say that I think a lot of time and barrel life is sometimes wasted with extensive node testing.

i believe if a rifle shoots really well (in the ones) at 100 yards, it will shoot well at 600. But 1000 yards may be a different story.

I started and stopped with H4350. Mine also shot everything really well from the get go. I ended up with 37.0gr of H4350 and a Berger 109 at .025" jump. Getting right at 2900fps from a 22" Bartlien.

I am going to start with 6.5 staball and Hornady 108 eldm 20 off the lands 6 powder charges and see what we get. I am going to use some h4350 for breakin low mid range load. Thanks for all the info gunsmith said he was cutting it today. Will post results as soon as I get it and test.

@280ai I’d bet you fall for the H4350 and stick with it.

Just FYI…. I’ve done load development about every way imaginable and I’ve settled on a seating depth test at 100, followed by charge weight looking only at point of impact. If the groups need any work at the center of my POI node I’ll swap bushings until it’s right.

Good luck. GT is a mighty fine little cartridge.

Look to achieve 2,875-2,925 with 33-34 VarGet using a 105 Berger Hybrid in Alpha brass depending upon how your barrel is.

I seem to have gotten a really fast one this time using 33.6 VarGet behind the 105 Berger.

Got my Rifle back break in with cci 450 Sie 107 smk 36.5 gr H4350= 1/2 inch. Load test cci 450 Hornady 108 eldm 6.5 Staball 38.8 gr shot 3/8 inch at 2905 sd 7 es 20. 5- 5shot groups of this load gave me this average soooo Iam going to give it a rip this weekend at Columbus Wi PRS match. Thank all of you for you replies>
