Trouble deciding on new caliber - Help

I had 2 6x47s that I couldn't get to shoot, one a 1-9 and the other a 1-8, no matter what I did I couldn't get the things to act right but it's a cool little cartridge, if you can get it to shoot they seem like they are one of the best hunting 6mms out there.

This is what I have read many times. Worries me. I wish somebody with an XC would chime in.

Problem is the 18" barrel.
You'll have a hard time with fast enough powder to burn in such a short barrel -with larger capacity cartridges.
Much of their potential will just blast out, igniting at the muzzle/suppressor in a big fireball(which your suppressor might not even be able to withstand). If it were me, I'd look for an underbore cartridge, allowing fast powder & burn of it.

The accuracy node on 6xc is huge. I.e. not finicky. Zero brass forming just load and go. For all practical purposes they are the same but XC guys always build another.

I had a 6XC before the better brass they have now. I built it for 600 yds benchrest, I wanted more speed over the 6BR. I did not get the speed or accuracy, 3" was the best it would do at 600yds, it is good for most shooting, but not for 600yds benchrest.
When the 6.5x47 came out a lot of guys built a 6mm X 47, and could not get them to shoot also. They cut the chamber off and rechambered to 6 BR, 6BRX and 6 Dasher and they shot good.

I think the brass was my problem with 6XC. I think with the new brass the 6XC would be good.

The problem with the 6x47 is the small primer and small flash hole, guys that got it to shoot better were opening the flash up, and it shot better. It works great for the 6.5mm, but not as well for the 6mm.

Remember the accuracy I am talking about is 600 yds benchrest, it takes sub 2" aggs to win now. But 3" = 0.5 MOA, that would be great for hunting or steel shooting.

I have heard a lot of guys are necking the 6.5 Creedmoor to 6mm

All my guns now are 6 BR or 6 BRX. I guess you want a mag feed gun, the 6BR type's don't feed to good from a mag. But accuracy is the best. The 6BRX or 6 Dasher would give you the same speed in a 18" as the 2 you are looking at, and much more accuracy. They work great in short barrels.

My 6x47s were in Rem Varmint contours as I wanted a hunting rifle that would feed from a regular 700 magazine, thought was a shorter barreled rifle 20-24" that would get the 105s to the happy place of 2970ish, seemed good on paper but never panned out, I wish I could have rechambered but it would have taken too much meat so the barrels got tossed in the river.

Ended up putting a new barrel on it in 6 Dasher, I'm still working up the loads for it but so far it's showing a lot more promise than the 6x47s showed, for a magazine I plan on using the Joel Russo bottom metal and mag, very similar to the acis ones but in a flush fit, I have no need for a 10 round mag in a bolt gun.

I'm hoping I can get 2920ish out of the 26" barrel, this may be down in velocity from what you are trying to acheive but if you decide to go with a 6br improved version, you could look at different bullets, the Sierra 95 TMK has a .5 G1 BC and performs like an Amax, or the 87 Amax as an option, both are fine critter gitters.

I've read where a lot of the tactical guys are having good results with a 6mm Creedmoor. I have never shot a Creedmoor in 6mm but I have 2 of them in 6.5 Creedmoor. One is a Model 7 with a 20" #3, 8 twist Shilen and it consistently shots in the .3's. I think one would be great in 6mm.

I have never had a 6X47, but I have seen one that wouldn't shoot. And it was a match gun not a sporter.

6-47L. The story's about the 6-47L's not shooting are only "semi true" (IMO) . I'll bet the guys saying they can't get them to shoot are mostly LRBR guys who are comparing it to their trusty Dasher/BRX/BRDX/...etc... For hunting purposes a 6-47L is awesome!! I have never shot one in comp, but I only found the 6-47 AFTER I got out of the game. Brass is very easy to make and it is as good as brass gets!! I am having a BLAST with mine on PDogs and banging steel out to four digit distances!! I have just under 2000 rounds on mine and the last test I shot last week while getting my zero with my hunting stock ran well under a 1/4 inch at 100 with the 108BT and H4350.

Good luck and have fun,
Tod
