New 155gr 6.5mm Berger on the horizon?

I've been shooting 150 Matrix in my SAUM in a Winchester SA. It kills elk with authority. I'm really looking forward to this bullet. With a 3.05" magazine and a .178" throat I'm hoping I'm going to be good to go with what I have. Does anyone know what the nose length and overall length is ?

If I was long range shooter I would never build a WSM or SAUM in a short action. The extra magazine length would let you load in a mag if you want and would let them eject. Then you could throat it to get more velocity. I would be willing to bet the WSM case could drive that bullet real good. It was too overbore in the 6.5 to use for 1000 yard BR. Everybody gave up on It, but one guy. He shortened it 3 times and was starting to get it to shoot where he could win. Then he got married and quit shooting. He told me he believed if he shortened it one more time he believed it would have been right.

Throated properly and a powder like Re 33 I bet it would be fast. One thing about a lot of the Berger bullets is they put a longer boattail on them and draw them out in the front. That makes for shorter bearing and less pressure compared to other bullets. If you take the 230 and throat it around .280 you can drive 3000 plus in a WSM. I can only run a 210 VLD 2850 in the case with a .210 freebore. It's has alot to do with freebore, length of bearing and speed of powder. Matt

You mean he was shortening the case and pushing the sholder back?

Yes he was shortening the body, it was way to overbore for the 140 grain bullets. I bet with the right throat and powder this case would rock those 155 grain Bergers. I know guys were shooting over 3200 with the 7WSM and a 180 VLD. Matt

LOL If someone is getting even close to 3200fps, let alone over 3200, with 180's out of any 7 WSM, they indeed have themselves one VERY special 7 WSM. Or, they are overloading the bejeezus out of it.

I have always wanted to try this myself. Basically make a big scaled up 6.5BR Norma with long neck and really reduce the length.

He used a 1.450 heavy barrel and a duplex load of powder, lots of freebore. It didn't shoot that great but was fast. He also was a tool and die man and made punches and dies for the punch press to tighten up the primer pockets. He was one like a lot of others that thought the quicker the bullet gets to the target, the less wind drift it has.

If a WSM with .280 freebore can easily reach 3000 with a 230. Reaching 3200 with a 50 grain lighter bullet would be feasible. It's the same case and they are built like a tank. I know guys shootimg the 7 SAUM are reaching 3000 with H4350 and a 180. The SAUM is A smaller case. Now use a slower powder and the velocity will come up. Matt

Hey, it's your fish story, tell it however you want, but I'd recommend against using any of these loads, that are producing these amazing velocities, in any of your personal gun/s.

Not saying you are wrong here, and somewhat side with you on velocity claims, but if barrel lengths were mentioned along with speeds, things may even out. A 24-26" barrel length will never yield the speeds a 30-32" will.

I hear what you're saying but even taking barrel length into consideration, these are fantasy land velocities.

Do you recall an approximate base to shoulder length he thought was going to be about right?

He never said now much he was shortening it. I would ask him for you, but only saw him once since he quit. Matt

No problem. Thanks anyway. I was wondering if he was getting down closer to the WSSM size? The 6.5 WSSM Ackley I just started messing with measures about 1.23" to the shoulder. I think a WSM case is about 1.7? I doubt he had shortened it up that much. As soon as my Whidden dies show up I can start working with the formed brass to see what kind of potential the 155 class has in it. I imagine I'll try H4350 and H4831SC in it.

Welcome to the internet!
Where 8-10 lb. mag fed hunting rifles w/ 'sporter' barrels get lumped in with single shot bench rifles w/ 30-32" truck axles...

Eh, what's another 8" of barrel, and .100"+ of freebore amongst friends, right???

This an accuracy site, thus the name Accurate Shooter or 6 BR. Most guys shooting competition are shooting 30 inch or longer barrels especially in heavy gun. Not everybody here is using a lightweight carry gun with a pencil barrel. Alot of guys are using heavy for caliber bullets to reach out there and still have energy. Heck some of the guys I know are using up to 46 inch barrels for hunting. Matt

I can only imagine how big this fish story will get by page six or seven. LOL

Some of you talk about freebore like it' s some magic pill that gains you hundreds of FPS and "guys I know are using up to 46 inch barrels for hunting" is just about the most laughable thing I've ever read. Heck, why stop at 46, why not 56. LMAO

I will suggest you look into who you are discrediting.

You had your laugh, now have respect. Matt isn't disrespecting anyone. Simply giving his experience. If you don't agree, say it. No need for ignorant comments. No ones laughing but you.

B23 Sir, - How about you tell us what your experiences are with long barrels or your designs of chambers & throat/leade including how you calculated what the out come would be ?? - And in what calibers ?
- I'm not here to "troll you" but you have made it obvious to some of us that you don't know much about ELR, Long Range Hunting or 1000 yd. competition and what goes into the rifles that are used in these endeavors. And that is understandable as one has to have the "want to" to so be engaged, but that's not a reason to question or to chastize those who do. - Nuf Said - Ron
