Never been PDog shooting!

I've read about it quite a bit some say it slows in winter some say it drops out all together. Are there any places that the dogs come out in fall or early winter. Money is tight but my in-laws just bought a new 5th wheel home on wheels which means I own one without the payments so I lodging would be a little cheaper...good in-laws for real. Ive looked into some all inclusive hunts which didn't seam bad at 1100.00 a head. This is a box I gotta check before I die so any suggestions would be awesome and very much appreciated. Thank you.

P-dogs are out just about any time of the year if the sun is out. They love to bask in the sun. That being said, Finding say a week with great weather
in winter is a hit or miss deal. The deeper the snow, the longer it takes them to pop up. If you have the time you should be able to get in a couple of good
days shooting. Fall is good, Oct Nov, but spring is great. Lots of little ones around May.
Unless you have to. Don't go!!! You'll have to come back.

Carefull, you are talking about one of the most addictive facets of shooting known to man. There is no cure just an itch you have to scratch.

October is a GREAT month for prairie dogs up in the Texas Panhandle... If you get up around Dalhart and simply ask some of the farmers you see around, they not only will give you permission to hunt>>>They want the 'dogs on their property decimated! Early October is better. It can get VERY cold up there very quickly once you make it to November. There is a main drag between Dalhart and Etter>>>those are the farmers you want to talk to..

I live in prairie dog country and have shot them all year long. I start shooting them with 17 RF rifles in the spring when the pups first come out of their holes. Over time the remaining p dogs become muzzle blast smart . By late fall I have seen p dogs go to their holes 400 yards away when shooting a 243 Win rifle. By then the little 17 RF rifles do not have the range to shoot p dogs. I use 204 Ruger , 22-250 Rem, 220 Swift, and 243 Win rifles but there are far fewer shots taken because of p dogs going into their holes. I have 6-18 or 6.5-20 power scopes on the flatter shooting longer range rifles. Accurate rifles , 1/2 inch groups or less at 100 yards are a must for late fall and winter shooting.

Sounds like you have to have a borderline match accuracy rifle. I have 5 gallon buckets of lake city brass so Illbe taking something based off of that like a 20 practical or .223 I like the idea if something happened 223 ammo is easy to find. When you are shooting out there do you NEED to bring light weapons, are you walking with them quite a bit or do you drive and setup

Everyones different in thier approach,

I drive and set up, shoot HEAVY guns to help soak up some of the recoil, this is a plus when the shooting gets hot and heavy.

Phil.

We drive in and shoot, walk to the next hill and shoot, walk or ride to the next hill and shoot..... You could walk a mile maybe, but heavy is not bad when you stop every few hundred yards or so.
Bring both so you know what you really like for next year.

Once you get it sorted out, take at least one heavy bench gun, and one for "walkabout". If the light rifle is something like an HMR or 20VT, recoil will not be a factor at the end of the day.

Also....take plenty of H2O!

H2o is a MUST HAVE.....

Also, don`t forget to sign up with Prarie Dog Hunters Anonymous, it`s a sickness and we all need HELP!!!!!! ;D

I usually drive and park shoot move etc.. These days I have been using a 22 Hornet almost exclusively. For a few years before that I was using my 22 Mag.. I have a few more varmint rifles, 223, 204, 243, 222, but get tired of luggin a heavy rifle around.. Besides the Hornet is cheap to shoot. Don't forget to bring a 22 LR.. Or a 22 handgun for those really close encounters
