How Are Varmints & Coyotes Harmful? Benefit of Shooting?

I make no apologies or excuses for the varmints I hunt. I shoot groundhogs and crows mostly. The groundhogs are shot because the farmers want them gone. Farmers have it hard enough without losing crops to a burrowing varmint whose holes cause many problems. Yes, I enjoy shooting them. They are much cagier than many people think. Crows are very intelligent and also fun to shoot. They are listed as varmints, hunted as varmints and they are fun to shoot.

I remember several years back in a major city in the Willamette Valley, the 'yotes were packing...and out in daylight. People were losing small pets, and all the pets food that was left outside. County Sheriffs and town police, with some expert regular shooter quietly got together on a week-end morning and in the towns city limits shot 54 yotes. Over the next several months more than 150 were taken and the problems stopped. You still see them every morning and early evening...but as it should be, they are one or two out mousing. Problem solved before it happened. It would be terrible to lose a child to a pack of them. We went out on the QT because of all the left-over hippies and bunny huggers that think they are cute deserve to take what they want from us...that's only because they were not personally involved. Lord knows Oregon is one of the jewels of the world, but these idiots have no reason or logic, and no learned application of either through the higher schools of learning we have here. We give nature it's due, and protect our own here...even if they don't know it because sheep are not very smart, even the expensive ones!!

I have been hunting groundhogs for 35 years now. I lost count years ago, I would venture to guess the number of kills is somewhere in the 1,000's.

20 years ago, I remember I went for a stretch of 3 consecutive years where I shot over 300, 350, and then 400 per year. It was a full-time job hunting on several farms.

The coyotes have thinned their populations down, that and good old Conibear 220's

Farmers, especially soybean farmers loses a SIGNIFICANT amount of crop damage from these vermin.

As, in everything in life....MODERATION is KEY.

Do I have FUN shooting these varmints?

Well...YES....YES I DO! ;D 8)

Young groundhog, from right after first haying, isn't bad. Old groundhog? Has to go to gumbo. You can make just about anything edible in gumbo.

It benefits me greatly to shoot coyotes....

they destroy my neighbors calf crop, eat pets, and decimate the deer herds by killing off fawns.
