Neutered 22-250 loads

Im trying to help out a good friend. He got a wild hair and chopped his Tika 22-250 down to a 16" barrel for a "compact suppressed " truck gun. So far minute of barn door is all I'm getting out of it. That was with Barnes 53 grain bullets using CFE223. He said he experienced the same thing with various factory loads. Im suspecting I'm using the right powder but need to use a different bullet.
Any of you fine folks ever loaded for a chopped 22-250?
 
I have 2 "chopped" .22-250s, a 15" XPR-100 handgun and a 14" SSK 14" XP-100 handgun. I've used both for 35+ years, initially with 50 gr. BTs, but switched to 40 gr. BTs a few years ago when I found they held up pretty well in ID wind where my friend & I have taken a little over 3500 rockchucks in 7 years, 5 days a year.
I've only used AA2015 BR all these years. Both guns shoot 3/8" at 100 & killed chucks out to 400.
I even tried 35 gr. Barnes X bullets, which did OK, but the 40 gr. BTs are so good I see no need to experiment any.
The XPR is a Rem. original. THe SSK is one of their custom guns.
 
I am a Handgun Hunter/Shooter. I have a Nosler M48 Handgun with a 15" barrel in 22 Nosler. It absolutely drives tacks, as do most of my specialty single shot handguns with 14"-16" barrels. I am in agreement with the above posters, his issue is probably with the crown or suppressor alignment, and not barrel length.

Chopped and threaded for a suppressor, then more than likely done on a lathe, so unless that guy was a hack then the crown probably isn’t the problem.
Regular 50 - 55 grain bullet and Varget, 4064, ww760, etc.
Is the scope decent and mounted correctly?

Barnes bullets like to jump. Start at .050 off the lands and work inward. Most all my hunting rifles shoot barnes and all but one is delighted at .050 off and shoot under .5". Using a term like "chopped off" leads to all sorts of assumptions. I'd be looking at the crown with a magnifying glass. The slightest imperfection is all it takes
 
Start with an easy shooting flat base bullet. I love the old Hornady sx bullets.
I have never played with a case filler with reduced loads
 
I suspect baffle strikes may be the problem if the threading was done with a die and was a hack job like you say. With the barrel already at 16" it may be a throw away.
 
I wouldn't think the CFE223 is the problem. I use it in my Ruger #1 .22/250 and 52-grain AMax bullets with stellar accuracy. Of course the Ruger has 10 inches longer barrel! I think the problem is likely the backyard gunsmithing.

EuroOptic is, practically GIVING Away,. Threaded, TIKKA 16 inch, Barreled Rifles ( They AIN'T, selling, well ! )
And Tikka is,.. Dumping them !
It took me 2 Weeks, to Find,.. a Threaded, 22 inch, SS, Tikka T-3 Lite, "Lefty", in .22-250 !
Yup,.. I got, the Last One from, a big chain store, in Minn. and at, a Sweet, "End of Year", Sale price "Deal" !
And my PVA Muzzle Brake is,.. in the Mail !
If, the .22-250 won't Shoot with, 4895 and a Flat Based, 50-55 gr Bullet,. Something's, REAL,.. Wrong !
PS;.. IMO, Junk, the CFE Powder and try one of, the 4895's, Varget or, IMR 8208xbr for, Powder.

This is what I did to no avail.
 
On a good note, he left me some sierras to try out. Im pretty sure they are 60 grain(I'm not at home right now). Although, i am worried about them stabilizing we'll in that 16" barrel.
 
I have two Savage Striker handguns in 22-250. I have not tried reduced loads but the loads that shoot well in my old Sako also shoot sub moa in my Savages
