Needing ideas for a 110 Savage Action

I am tearing down an old 110 Savage Police Sniper in 30-06 and going to restock it and rebarrel it. I am considering a new caliber like 6.5 Swede, 300 Win Mag, 338 Lapua, etc. The gun's purpose is to hit targets from 600 yards and beyond. She was actually a decent bench gun for club matches but now I want to make it a long range plinker. Right now I am split between 300 Win Mag and the 6.5 Swede. Any suggestions? Critiques?

Something in a 7mm...A 284 Shehane, perhaps.

The 6.5 will essentially match the ballistics of the .300 win mag while being quite a bit less powder hungry and easier on the shoulder.

I've also got a Savage 110 and I will be building a 6.5 Swede. I shot one this last spring and was very pleased with the low recoil and ability of the cartridge. The recoil of the 300WM is definitely enough to sway me the other direction.

Since you said 600 yd. + "plinker" there are the 6.5 x 47 L, the 260 Rem. and isn't the 6.5 Sweede case head larger that your 06 bolt face ?

30-06 bolt face will most likely work. I believe the 6.5 Swede to have a case rim diameter of .480. Most domestic ammo will fit. I have heard about guys running Lapua brass to be more likely to have issues as the Lapua brass is slightly larger. PTG sells a .480 bolt face, others have turned their case rims down to fit.

As a plinker paper puncher? Something easy and accurate, 260 Rem would be my first choice. Maybe even rock a straight 284 now that there is more factory brass available. If you can't decide buy a couple different barrels and swap as needed, the savage is pretty easy as far as that goes. I have 3 different barrels for my striker pistol for just that reason, switch barrel.

I like the suggestion of something in 7mm.... 284 or a 280 Ackley Improved. Great BC bullet choices. A 280AI sending a 162gr A-max at 3,000 fps is going to be tough to beat for longer distance, unless you want to swap out your bolt face to a magnum or something larger.

Thanks for the suggestions... From the responses and some research I am leaning towards the lighter recoiling 6.5 Swede.
