Need Target 223 Barrel

The good Lord has blessed me with a wondreful and beautiful girlfirend that wishes to share my f/tr shooting time. I have a timed and trued Savage action I'd like to get a target 223 barrel made for. This is a small shank stainless action and would be looking for a 26-30 inch stainless barrel. I'm looking for a suggestion on a gunsmith to chamber a barrel and a suggestion on the reamer so she can shoot up to 80 gr Bergers. I am thinking of a Krieger or a Brux barrel.
thanks
jim

are you looking for a local smith? if not, Longshot rifles does a good job on all makes of receivers. check out their website--they have tons of pics on their rifles. they have a significant reamer selection also

I have two McGowen barrels and have been pleased with them. I have a 30" .308 10" twist and a 26" .22-250 9" twist, both stainless bull barrels. Both are very accurate in my 12F.

McGowen is running a 15% off sale until the end of January.

Just in case you don't know. Shilen can spin you up any barrel your looking for on a Savage action to your specs. It'll cost a bit more than a standard run of the mill Shilen Savage replacement barrel. Out of the box ready to screw on at home with no gunsmith required. Providing you have a barrel wrench and a barrel vice of course. All Savage owners have these essential tools of the trade right?? ;D

Fred Moreo of Sharp Shooter Supply is the preminent guru of Savage smithing. Never did business with him myself. The wait ( I hear) can be very long................

The only savage Smith I ever did business with is lprgunsmith.com (not sure if this link will work)
Larry Racine. Been building and shooting savages in F Class and Palma forever. Two times on the Us Palma Team.
He might not have the exact tube your looking for. He might not even have the reamer you want (you'll have to ask) But he sure does know his way around long range Savages.
Any friend of the late Creighton Audette can be a smith of mine ;)

BTW I'm building a short range Savage in the basement for my new girlfriend also. Life is GOOD!!!!!!! ;) ;D

You guys with the new girlfriends should be careful. If your wives find out, you'll be in big trouble! ;D

I just ordered a Brux last week or so. Norm said the prices were going up $20.00 later in Jan. I think he said the 20th????

Jim Briggs at Northland Shooter Supply has Shilen Select Match-Small Shank-1:8 twist in both a factory varmint and bull contours available for immediate deliver for $289. Hard to beat that price. Jim calls the long throated 223 a 223 Wylde. I don't know the history of that name, by I know what is it. I have got several items from Jim, including Shilen barrels, and been very pleased with him.

Jim My friend built a 223 rem with a 28" Krieger 7.7 twist with a Wylde chamber on a 700 trued action, Using 80gr Berger vld & Varget
the gun is just plain amazing, he is a very good shooter.
He shoots at 300y and is constantly under 1" 5 shots I watched him shoot 5 in .520" last fall, but two weeks ago he fired a three shot group at 300y look at pic
My new gun build will be ready in a week or so I talked with Dave Kiff at Pacific tool and he recommended the Match reamer as I will be trying to get 90grs to work for F class to 1000. He claimed the match would work good with 80 & 90gr bullets. I ordered a 30" 1/7 twist.

I used the calipers at range with holes for measuring targets the 3 shots where .228"

I do not see how anyone could have built a better gun that this fellow, "Jim my friend".

I shoot Savages in F-Class almost exclusively and have made High Master. I use Larry Racine for all my Savage gunsmithing. He was a USA Palma Team shooter and specializes in Savage builds. http://www.lprgunsmith.com/index.htm

He does excellant work, is reasonable, and is fast. I would use no one but him on my Savages and I always recommend him to fellow Savage shooters.

I agree with manitou210 on the chamber, brand of barrel, length of barrel, and twist rate.

I have been having good luck with my Racine 'smithed factory barreled 223 (he trued the action, rechambered and recrowned the barrel and diamond lapped it - I know but this was done for a friend and I subsequently bought the gun) out to 1000 yards using 75 gr Berger VLD's and 25 grains of H4895 in a Lapua case with Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers. I found that they shoot best in my gun when they are jammed .030".

My wife shot with me for 5 years before she passed away. These were the best years of my life!
