NEED ANSWER

i have a friend that has a 700 xcr lrt in a 308 and the first time he shot it with a factory fed load the barrel blowed out and part of the case was stuck in gun.the question is can the gun do that with a double powder load or was it more than that?

Can you give us a better description of what "blowed out" means? Did the barrel split? I doubt it would be an over charged factory round. Sounds more like a barrel obstruction from what little you have described. Any pictures?

the barrel bulged out all the way down the barrel. he checked the barrel before he shot the gun.i dont have any pics.

i agree, the likely hood of an overload factory chance is nil

thus, if the blown case head shows the 308 id, then the question is how didhe check for clear bbl, a patch part, cleaning rod coming unscrewed, are often the cause,

was this the first shot of the rifle? had he shot reloads or anything else before?

most of all send it to Rem and let them investigate

Bob

That barrel and action could handle a double charge most likely, if you could even fit a double charge in the cartridge. My vote's for a barrel obstruction.

If not obstructed, something created an obstruction. Is the shooter sure its a 308? Is the ammo 308? etc, etc.

There's not enough room in a .308 case to double charge it, and if it were an over pressure load (very unlikely in factory ammunition) the case head would have failed, leaving the barrel pretty much unharmed, barrels bulge when there is something in the way, mud, water, grease, squib, cleaning rod jag etc. Or incorrect ammunition (projectile too large for the bore).

he took gun back where he bought it from and they gave him a different gun.the store called remington and they talked to the main guy there he said its a metal problem with the barrels.hes not the only one that had that happen.

I notified Remington about this thread, (and the thread started over at SH) here's a copy of their response to me.

Thanks for letting us know about this, I can assure you 100% that there have been no issues with our rifles barrels leading to this kind of failures, and the part about the rifling cutter breaking off is false as well as we do not manufacture cut rifled barrels, we use exclusively a cold hammer forging process. I'm afraid I cant explain what exact the motive would be behind this kind of posting, but I does not seem to be founded in facts.

I know Weatherby and Sako test fire their rifles prior to sale but does anyone know if Remington does? It's been a long time since I purchased one. I would think a metal issue with the barrel(s) would show up in testing. I still can't help but think there is more to this than meets the eye. I am glad to hear that Remington took care of the issue under warranty and provided another rifle. I too am glad the guy was not hurt.

Any chance the gun shop owner can get an answer from Remington after he ships it back? I sure would like to know what the inspection shows.

do people really think that remington would tell every body about that kind of a problem,i dont think so.there not going to tell people there haveing problems with there guns and risk people not buying them, unless you own a bad gun.ive talked too several people about these guns and they have had problems with theres including mine in 300wm,it was coppering so bad i had to shoot tubb ff through the gun and sand the stock because it was hitting barrel in 4 places.out of about 20 people ive talked to that own one half have had problems the rest havent.but most have been in 308.besides everybody has there own opinion.
