Need annealing help

Hi Guys,

Stupid question here: I am new to the practice of annealing. After some research I picked up a bottle of 650 degree Templiaq and proceeded to anneal my 270 Win brass. I am heating with a standard propane torch. While heating I notice the templiaq inside the case mouth burns a purple color. What I am not sure is if that is the point it is melting or not? Also the templiaq inside the mouth has a charcoal color/residue. I am annealing in the dark and the cases begin to appear a dark red before I cut the flame. I am just not sure how to use the tempilaq as a gage for when to stop flame? How can I tell if it is melting?

I appreciate any insights.

thanks

templaq changes colour when it reaches its temperature rating...so if you paint it on white and after applying heat it is no longer white you have reached temp.

To make it clearer for yourself (to illustrate only - I'm not advising to change from painting on the inside of the necks) - take a case, any old case and coat the neck and all of the body in templaq. Go through your annealing process. You will see the templaq change colour to a point down the body of the case, this is where the heat in the case started to dissipate and the temperature of the case is below 650c.

Good luck.

I paint the case neck with a brush sized stripe all the way around. Let it dry, hit the case shoulder with a torch and start counting, 0ne thousand one, one thousand two, etc. When the templaq changes to the charcoal color, remove the heat. I verify with a couple more cases and go with that count number for the rest. 6 or 7 seconds is my usual count on 30-06 brass.

Test with a vise grips- Close (touching only) the visegrip on the case mouth, then adjust the visegrip tighter by 3/4 to 1 more turn closed. Squeeze the neck, if the springs back to round, its good. If it stays oblong, its to soft and you may have a safety concern.

Turning the case necks red IMHO maybe to much heat.

If you clean or tumble the brass before annealing it makes it easier to see color changes in the brass as you heat it. When it turns blue it is at 600 degrees. If find this easier to use.

Jay,
I'm certainly no annealing expert, but what's it doing inside the case mouth???? I don't use the stuff, but I've not seen anyone put it INSIDE the case mouth. Isn't that a double wammie?

You paint it on the inside and it changes color when the heat soaks through the neck wall. Only takes a few seconds. Otherwise, if painted on the outside, as soon as the flame touches it....poof!

For the original poster.....Tempilaq is your friend. Paint a stripe inside of the neck. Spin your case in the heat for a known amount of time. A cheap metronome works great for this. Check if the Tempilaq changed color. If not, leave in the flame longer, if yes....well, you get the idea.

Angle the case mouth away from the flame. If you allow the flame or intense heat to blow into the mouth, you will get a false indication with the Tempilaq as well.

It is tricky annealing by hand and having very consistent results. Flame location, flame position, speed of revolutions, counting time and duration in the flame, dumping them out of the holder and not denting your necks, etc., etc.

But it can be done. Good luck.

I hear ya. That's the problem with having 95% garbage info on the internet re annealing. The one logical place to put it (inside the neck) as the primary heat indicator gets drowned out by all the reposting of the wrong ways of doing it.
