need an automatic primer pocket cleaning tool

I bought a set of these at least 10 yrs ago (half the price now) and they're still going strong. Set it, forget it and the collar prevents going too deep. I chuck mine in a variable hand drill with the lowest RPM range. Seriously, it takes longer to pick up a piece of brass and set it back down, than the dwell time. Best yet, its double ended. Haven't needed to switch it yet!

Pocket Uniformer

Hoot

Edit: I forgot to mention, the guy will resharpen it if you need him to for free. Just pay postage.

the bottom line is you are pretending to be precise, while ignoring the primer pocket depth.
using one uniformer tool in the process to initialy set the pocket depth and then to MAINTAIN the depth and clean the pocket so the primer is set the same maintains the intial precision.
primer pockets have a habit of moving over the life of the brass. cleaning with a brush ignores this.
i measure and check my primer pocket depths and primer thickness every time with the best tools out there.

so i am definitely not ignoring primer pocket depth, but if the primer pocket depth does move, then i understand your point.

but i do keep track my primer pocket depths and primer depth/crush with each firing, and have not observed any movement as of yet.

Welp, thems the options. Figure out a way to power it or get carpal tunnel. Something tells me that unless it's a brush or plastic or something like that, the Redding tool has the potential to remove material, as well.

Otherwise, wet tumble with pins or ignore it.
probably gonna just gonna get an rcbs trim mate unit and hopefully the redding attachments thread in.

i was hoping someone would chime in with a better alternative but it looks like im not on the same page as many members here.

appreciate everyones input on this

I have been using the rcbs steel brush pocket cleaners for the case prep center chucked in a cordless drill, just hold a case on the spinning brush for a few seconds, all done!

Set your primer pocket unoformer to just scrape the carbon.

Or wash it with SS media, as suggested earlier.

I've found that cleaning the primer pockets BEFORE wet tumbling gives me the results I am looking for. I use a couple different methods to clean the pockets before wet tumbling, a little crow tool that will hold 4 different case prep tools and easily change out as needed, and a FA prep center with a pocket cleaning tool inserted into one of the attachment points. I use the little crow tool for low volume brass during load development, usually right after I shoot those rounds I deprime and clean the pockets, then dump the dirty brass in the brass tub marked for that rifle. After a pdog/sage rat shoot and I have several hundred rounds of dirty brass to process, I use the FA prep center and just buzz thru 'em as I feel like it.

this is not automated, but works well for 20 cases or so, time efficient, etc. easy to set up/use. You want automated, any motorized prep center and the tool to fit works.

I f you want to just clean the pockets. Wet tumbling does it fairly easy. If you want to do it with a tool without getting carpal tunnel. K and M pocket correction bits that chuck up in your cordless drill. I have both the large Pistol and Large rifle. They work very well at removing carbon. On cases that have already been corrected they cant cut any further.

K&M tool is good. If it doesn’t clean every bit of crud out of the bottom of every case, I don’t care. Of course, I’m also the same guy that doesn’t tumble brass. No need.

"...I found it wasn’t worth the hassle."

That's pretty much what a long time Palma Team member opined about cleaning primer pockets during one of those great chat sessions while waiting on a firing line relay change.

For my Palma ammo and "Any Rifle" reloading I found decapping, tumble clean, lube, size with a decapping pin in the die to dislodge any media from the flash hole to be perfectly adequate in my .308 and 6 Dasher.

i want to clean them, not just to 100% clean. 95% from a primer pocket cleaning tool (not uniformer) is good enough for me, enough to make sure no carbon crud is preventing a firm anvil seat.

not going to argue with seasoned competitors but personally i want my pockets clean, confidence in your loads is half the fight.

“I do about 20 things in my reloading process…..Likey only 10 of them actually make a difference. I just don’t know which 10”

I like the 21st Century Primer Pocket Uniforming Tool, just prepped new batch of brass and I use the same tool to keep my pockets clean after every firing…….does it make a difference, dunno :)

I just got this 21st Century tool, can’t wait to try it on my Dewalt. Thanks for posting this.

A friend of mine made the USA World Benchrest Team that went to France in 2021. Never cleaned a neck in any qualifying matches.

I dont bother uniforming or cleaning primer pockets anymore. If it hurt, I sure cant tell. If anything I want to say it shoots better that way.
you really aren’t afraid of the carbon/gunk preventing square and firm anvil contact against the bottom of the pocket?

i would imagine it would build up after multiple firings? i figure that carbon after a while has to be worth a few thou?

I would be careful using a power tool to clean this area of the case especially when it doesn't add any value. You might do more harm than good.

Late to this party, sorry.

I once was asked to troubleshoot a guys light strikes on a rifle (nothing fancy; just an over-the-counter consumer gun) where the guy was only getting ignition about 1 out of 10 reloads. After a bit of detective work, I looked at one of the offending rounds - the primer was probably more than .01" recessed. I asked if he had used a primer pocket truing tool; he replied he just used a pocket cleaner, and because of his OCD, he doesn't stop until every little bit of discoloration is gone. Apparently, he doesn't stop until most of the brass is gone as well. Never seen the guy again, so don't have anything more than this.

I make sure they are all the same dept out of the box of new Lapua brass, but
after that I never clean them...ever.

I think I have prematurely ruined more good brass with the 21c 'uniformer' and similar. If your pocket comes out all pretty lookin on the bottom then the tool has removed brass. Ok I guess for cases that only last 4-5 firings. But my 6br Lapua keep going and I am not removing brass as they are uniform from the gitgo so not needed. I use a ss sharp pick to scrape out the build up in the corners where the primer walls seat. Its just one twist per case. Inspected many with 10x loupe before and after and it does the job removing the buildup with no damage to the case. If I dont do this I can feel variances in seat pressure with my 21c hand primer as the carbon crud buildup in corners varies. Not sure if makes a diff but it is fast to clean out the gunk so I do it anyhow.
