need an automatic primer pocket cleaning tool

I think I have prematurely ruined more good brass with the 21c 'uniformer' and similar. If your pocket comes out all pretty lookin on the bottom then the tool has removed brass. Ok I guess for cases that only last 4-5 firings. But my 6br Lapua keep going and I am not removing brass as they are uniform from the gitgo so not needed. I use a ss sharp pick to scrape out the build up in the corners where the primer walls seat. Its just one twist per case. Inspected many with 10x loupe before and after and it does the job removing the buildup with no damage to the case. If I dont do this I can feel variances in seat pressure with my 21c hand primer as the carbon crud buildup in corners varies. Not sure if makes a diff but it is fast to clean out the gunk so I do it anyhow.
As far as I can tell, I'm NOT "ruining" my brass with I get a little bit of brass removed from the bottom of my primer pockets. The amount removed on each cleaning with my uniformer is very small amount to get the pockets back to speck. Upon firing cases, like with my .308 cases, I found the pressure has pushed the base of the pocket up just a little on each firing and that's why I get a little bit of brass removed to get the bottom of the pocket back to where I want it. I tend to see more bits of brass removed on my LRP's and almost none on my SRP's. A batch of SRP Lapua brass that I've fired 19 times hasn't shown any issue of being "ruined" . . . nor for any other brass I've processed this way.

Late to this party, sorry.

I once was asked to troubleshoot a guys light strikes on a rifle (nothing fancy; just an over-the-counter consumer gun) where the guy was only getting ignition about 1 out of 10 reloads. After a bit of detective work, I looked at one of the offending rounds - the primer was probably more than .01" recessed. I asked if he had used a primer pocket truing tool; he replied he just used a pocket cleaner, and because of his OCD, he doesn't stop until every little bit of discoloration is gone. Apparently, he doesn't stop until most of the brass is gone as well. Never seen the guy again, so don't have anything more than this.
I know that a nice pristine, shiny, uniformed primer pockets looks nice and makes us feel good, but I can tell you from personal experience of shooting hundreds, if not thousands of rounds that it doesn't make any difference on target that I could ever detect.

I'm not suggesting that you do not apply a few manual twists of a primer pocket cleaning tool to remove the gross primer residue, but I honestly believe that you do not need to clean to the extent that every last bit of residue is removed. And I really believe that one runs the risk of doing more harm than good using a power operated primer pocket cleaning tool.

If someone can produce statistically significant data that shows a difference over many rounds tested, then I'll believe.

I use either a Crocogator or the Hornady pocket cleaner, and clean *almost* every firing (there's the odd time when I want to load with a lack of time to do so, and I'll skip pocket cleaning before skipping anything else.) I do notice flecks of brass along with all the ash that cleaning takes out - not much, but it's there.

I don't know how much I'm affecting the pockets, but I have a set of 200 pcs of brass for my first 2 short range 6BR barrels that have gone over 25 firings. Pockets are looser, but not loose. I have no primer depth problems.

I use primer pocket uniformers that are adjustable, set so that they do not cut brass and leave the bottoms of pockets less than sparkling clean. They never cut brass. I have never seen any convincing evidence that there is any advantage to getting every speck out. One of my uniformers has a custom handle that is a piece of half inch aluminum rod that is long enough to lay across the palm of my hand with my fingers and thumb positioned to turn it. The smaller diameter, smooth finish, and length combine to make a super tool. I have never seen another like it, and for me it is more comfortable than any of the several others that I own. If I want to use power, I chuck and adjustable PMA tool uniformer in one of my cordless drills and make sure that I have the cutter in the pocket and then trigger the drill. I do not want to scar up the sides of the pockets. My process does not degrade pockets in any way.

Used this non adjustable to clean and uniform 220 Russian for 21 years.

Hard telling how many thousands of pieces of brass I've ruined....:cool:no wonder my aggs are so big.20230307_152851.jpg20230307_152556.jpg

If you use a top of the line CPS tool that adjusts as fine as a rats nuthair wont it make sense if all your primer pocket are the same depth ? If you don't bother unifying the primer pockets/depth whey not just seat your primers with a $20 lee hand primer?

I stick my 21st century uniformer attached to my cordless Dewalt into every primer pocket before I seat a fresh bang button. I don't know if it makes a difference in my life but its allot easier to clean them like that then sitting there with a little brush thing and it removes some brass on most of them after firing so it gives me a bit of peace of mind. Some one once told me if you keep al the small things in check the big things will follow by them self

I use to do a bit of salt water fishing and one day after launching the boat etc. I walked into an old bait shop to pick up something and overheard the old guy tell a customer looking at the latest lures that those weren’t for the fish those were to lure fisherman.
Maybe there’s a parallel in my story.
