Need Advice on Bases?

I'm shooting a Savage LRPV in .223 cal. I've been shooting Sierra 69gr. HPBT Match bullets in it so far. I'm wanting to mount the scope so I can dial up as much elevation as possible,that will work with this gun,and load combo. Running at 2950fps. I would like to be able to set the elevation down to the bottom and be close to a 100yd. zero. then "click" up from there,for longer yardages. But I don't know what MOA angle base to use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ron

rks1949, I have a 20 MOA Ken Ferrell one piece base and rings on my Savage LRPV 22-250. I can shoot 600 yds. and still have my elevation adjustment fairly close to centered in my Leupold MK IV 8.5 X 25 X 50 scope. I hope this helps. Bill

Yes it dose,Bill! I wasn't sure how much elevation adjustment I needed? The scope is a Sightron 24X44 SII. It claims to have windage/elevation travel of 60,60 what I'm not sure?) Inches or "clicks"? Thanks Ron

"60" probably indicates minutes-of-angle available. Ex; a mid power Leupold would have "56", the higher end Leupold are listed as "75". Both #'s indicate moa available. The ability to have a lot of "up" adjustment is one of the reasons I use the Burris Signature zee rings with the off-set inserts.

Are the "Z" rings hard to line up for windage? Sorry about all the questions,but I have never used them before. Ron

Ron,

Usually they aren't too bad. You can rotate one or both sets of the inserts to give you windage correction instead of elevation. Generally life is easier if you don't have to, but occasionally you get a barrel and/or scope mount that aren't looking to the same spot.

Monte,would it be simpler to get a Ferrell 20 MOA base?Also with a one peice base do you still have to lap the rings,or are they on the same plane? When it comes to this stuff,I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. Looking at the ballistics program,Sierra Infinity),it looks like my bullet will be droping to 214inches at 800yds. Is this too far to shoot a .223? Thanks Ron

Ken Ferrell rings normally don't require a whole lot of lapping. Maybe just run your tool over the rings a little and see how level they are. Bill

Put the Leupold magnetic bore sighter on the muzzle, loosen the rings, rotate the scope while pushing down on the scope, adjust the scope until it stays on the same point. That point is where the rings are pointed. Shim the mounts to the receiver until the scope is pointed to the desired elevation. Glass bed the mounts to the receiver. Tighten the mount screws and the ring screws.
