Advice on rings & bases

I'm going to start to punch holes in paper with a Savage F Class in 6mm Norma BR and a Sightron SIII 8x32x56 scope.

I have several questions that I know can be answered by the many knowledgeable shooters on this board.

1-Will std. bases be enough with this scope to 600yds, or do I need something with a built in 20 MOA

2-I have read on this board the Burris Sig. Zee rings with +10 and -10 inserts are a good fix if your bases do not have built in ele.

3-What is the best VALUE in rings and bases for this set up.

4-What would you use considering this is an entry level gun.

Coverdog, With that scope you may not need the 20 MOA base but I think I would spring for it because of being able to leave your scope adjustment pretty much centered at 600 yards and maybe in the future you will want to shoot even farther out. I used the Ken Ferrell 20 MOA base on my Savages along with his rings also and I am not familiar with the Burris inserts which may work fine. Don't know. As far as value goes, I think Ken's bases and rings are top quality. I own 2 sets of each and I have just recently purchased another set up for a rifle build that is in the near future. So far I have found hardly any lapping to be needed with the 2 sets of rings that I now own. I hope this helps. Just my opinion. Bill

Only you can answer the first question, and the rest are just opinions, not facts.

As to #1, it depends on how much elevation adjustment remains from your short range zero. Typically, a flat base will result in a short range zero being several MOA above the midway point of your scope's internal adjustment range.

As to #3, there is no BEST. Not in any product category. Choose a worthy alternative, and get to the range to deal in facts rather than hypotheticals. What are the worthy alternatives? Use the search function, friend. Your questions have all been asked before, maybe a gazillion times.

As to #4, see #3. Use what you can afford.

Running 2850,fairly mild load) with a 6BR and 105s, you'll have 78" of drop from a 100 yard zero.

1 MOA at 600 yards is 6 * 1.047 = 6.282

That means you'll need 78/6.282 = 12.42 MOA to get to 600. That's 50 clicks.,FYI, at my somewhat faster 6BR load I need 47 clicks, so I have confidence in that 50 click estimation.)

I think you'll be pretty close to the center of your elevation at 100 because your scope centerline is 1.5-1.7" above the bore axis. Your actual drop from 0 to 100 yards is 2.24".

Accordingly I don't think you'll need an angled rail. The new Sightron 8-32 has 37.5 MOA of elevation above center.

Re what rings to buy. While I wish the Burris Sig Zees had a better rail-clamping system, I still think they are excellent and are superior to anything anywhere near the price. I think the plastic inserts represent a superior technology flat-out, period.

Personally, I'd just run the Sig Zees, and probably drop in some preload with the inserts if I did MOST of my shooting at 400 to 600.

Those Burris Signature Z rings are the best thing since sliced bread, and I never use anything else on any of my stuff, and don't see any need to change that.....

For a solid value in a base, Savage sells the steel, Ken Farrel for $50 and a small shipping fee. They only carry the 0moa base. For ring value it's hard to beat the Burris XTR tactical or the signature rings,if you need adjustment or don't have lapping tools). I like the XTR rings on the Farrel base.

As an opinoin ONLY, I would get the 20 MOA base even if you don't need it now.

You may decide to try the 1K game and that will be a necessity. Plus, it will provide better resale as a buyer may want to try the 600 - 1000 yd game and your rifle will be setup and ready to go.

I like the Burris Signature Zee Rings as well, but I have never used them on a Picatinny Rail. Do they work well on this type of set up? Any problems, or things to watch out for? I'm going to be scoping out 2 new Savages in the not too distant future. A Savage Model 10 FP, and a Savage 12 F/TR, both in .308 Win. I have the Burris Signature Rings on a Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06 for about 2 years now without a bit of problems. I just wondered how the Signature Zee Rings would be with a Picatinny Rail set up on the 2 Savages? Bill T.
