Need advice on barrel and bullets

I'm looking for advice on barrel and bullets for 100/200/300 yard benchrest. I normally shoot 8 twist barrels at long range but want to shoot shorter distances. I have a Krieger 1-13.5 twistbarrel I just got but want another brand to try. Thinking Brux, Bartlein, etc. Also looking for advice on bullets. Looking to purchase a bunch of different brands for testing. Any advice appreciated. I have a very good selection of powders minus vv as that seems impossible to find that.

Read the equipment list for any major point-blank BR tournament. Choose any bullet that is regularly found in the top 10 and you will be fine. No need to try a bunch of different bullets -- maybe 1 flat base and 1 boat tail if you're feeling adventurous.

There is more difference between lots from the same bullet maker than between "brands," because the difference in bullet quality is mostly due to the lot of jackets used, and there are only 2 or 3 sources of jackets.

Tty a 30 BR with 10X bullets. 1:18 twist. I have one I put on my long range rifle. Great fun.

Great advice, equipment list includes: Action, Barrel, Trigger, Scope, and stock. You will see a lot of differences on stocks, but actions and bullets are probably the top 2 to look at.

Also, some say button barrels shoot flat based bullets better, and cut rifle barrels shoot VLD's better. Just making a statement, you will find many opinions.

Go to the home page on this site and review the "Guns of the Week" thread. You might pick up some information there!

Back up. What cartridge are you planning on shooting for short-range benchrest? 6PPC, 22PPC, 30PPC, or 30BR? Other?

Sorry, it is a 6BR and I will be shooting group. I understand the 6PPC is ideal for this purpose but I do not intend to shoot competition and I do not want the added expense of switching to a PPC. I shoot mostly at 300 yards so was considering ordering a Bartlein barrel in a 1-10 twist. This would allow me to shoot the Berger 95 VLD and 95 BIB bullets. Not sure what contour and length would be ideal. Weight is not an issue.

Thanks,
Joe

Forget the 6 and go with the 30BR 17 twist Krieger, brux, bartlein,... 10X bullets ,... varget powder.... cci primers BR4 , 450, or 400 . This will work great for 300 yards! The 6's cant stay with the 30's when the wind blows...

I think if i was shooting 300 most of the time with a BR. i would have a 8 twist and shoot the BIB 104's as they will shoot in the zero's at 100 yds. and you will be better at 300 yds. when the wind blows….. jim

Jim, have you shot the BIB 104? I'm curious what the optimum free bore is for that bullet as I have several 1-8 twist barrels with a .104 freebore I could test them in.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, If your shooting the 6mmBR, then Everything, and I mean Everything you want to know about it is right here: http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/6mmbr/

Print it out. Read it over and over at least six times so you get to know it real well. Use it as a reference guide. Read it some more. A lot of time and effort went into producing the Excellent information covered there. Good Luck. :)

I would go to the equipment list for the super shoot and look up what the top 25 or 50 are using. This is a big shoot and would give a good indication of what is working. The only thing I believe it won't tell is the twist. Matt

OUCH! Sorry I can't agree with that one. Gotta have them both. The more toys the better.

I have to agree with Shynloco, except he's limiting himself more than I do. Add a 22BR to fool with and you have a nice toy box. But seriously, after having shot all 3 through various barrels and twists and etc... If I were SURE that I would be shooting at 300 yards 90% of the time, I would shoot a 6mmBR in a slower twist rate like a 1/10 to 1/4 which will place the most of the really premium bullets of the right weight (length) in a nice lil' group at that range and also at 100 and 200 in case you get into club matches.

Still, if the reloading/case prep bench is half of the fun for you and you want to learn a lot about, and collect the tools to use in forming, semwildcatat cartridges, or don't mind spending seriously extra$$$ to have someone else do the forming, by all means the 30BR is a great cartridge, a breeze to tune and maintain, and the 22BR can shoot at that range too.

My best 200 and 300 yard targets have been with the 6BR 1/14 66gr (if I remember right) FB Precision Ballistics bullets. I've just started breaking in a new barrel using Berger column bullets in that same rifle and it looks very promising. Berger WEB 65gr. bullets did very well for me last year at 200 and also 300 yards.
