rifle is going to be used for long range hunting.

i bought a pack of 100 ct. 168grn berger 7 mm match VLD's
,their really sexy) the box says thier rated for 1/10 twist or faster. i have a 1/8 twist. the barrel is 29.5 inches long.

can anyone point me in a good direction? i have a handloading book, noslers 5th, is this a god way to start?

i have already bought two boxes of remington cor-lokt for site in purposes. thanks alot guys, brian

Brian, I have always had really good luck with the Nosler 140 and 150 gr. BT in seven mags. I have shot some of those 168 VLD Bergers and I like those too. For the heavier bullets I like Hodgdon 1000. My best groups have been with Nosler Brass, 168 Berger VLD, 215 Fed. Match primer, 72 gr. of H-1000 seated .010 from the lands. You should be able to play with this load and make it work for you. Bill

Brian - it will be interesting to see what that long barrel does for you - I think it will be useful with the magnum!

I've been loading, shooting and hunting with the 7mm Rem mag for quite a while now, with some success. Like you, I'm just starting to mess around with the Berger VLD's and this cartridge.

In the past I've had excellent results on paper, using Sierra's 168 gr Matchking over 62.5 gr of Reloader 22 for 2860 fps from a mere 24" barrel. It was an accurate and easy-shooting load.

Recently contacted Berger for recommended 7mm/168 loads and they were kind enough to send me quite a bit of info, some of which is here:

start load of 62 RE-22 = 2832 fps, max of 65 = 2984 fps
start load of 67 Ramshot Magnum = 2845 fps, max of 70.7 = 3019 fps
start load of 66 Retumbo = 2839 fps, max of 70.4 = 3022 fps

I don't know what barrel length they used, but their results with RE-22 are similar to mine with a 24" barrel.

They also sent me some interesting data for the 180 gr VLD, max loads were mostly in the 2800 - 2850 fps range.

I seem to have deleted the e-mail from Berger after I printed out the info they sent, or I'd forward it to you.

Regards, Guy

I have had great success with the 162gr Amax. The three powders that worked real well for me has been 4831SC R19 and R22. My current load is 65.5gr of R22 Norma Brass with a 210M primer. I like Bill's use of H1000 as it should give better load density for that big ole case. You sure have enough barrel to burn all that slow powder.
You should have a great shootin rifle. Give some details, like what barrel And scope are you running.

My best Friend laid down behind my rifle last year and made a 796 yard 1 shot kill on a bedded down doe., after about 15 to 20 Min of coaching and dry firing). she never twitched jumped bleated or moved at all. her head just drop ed straight down. every thing was perfectly executed.

That same rifle has connected on a 3foot tall by 2 foot wide steel plate at over one mile,1774 yards) It took me 3 shots and another 5 to hit twice. just skimming the sides as the gentle wind played hell with that bullet.

Best of luck Brian
and remember bullet placement is EVERYTHING no matter what bullet you use.

Another vote for the 162 a-max. 65 gr of RL22 with Fed. GM215M..very accurate in the factory remington. 24 inch barrel gave average velocity of 2930 fps.
