7mm rem mag @1000yrds?

Hi Rust i would not use the A Max's i have had good ones and verry bad ones i now take the tips off and shoot them at game not targets
i would look firstly at the 175gr Sierra and then the 180gr Berger if the Sierra does not work but i doubt that. the 9 twist is fine for all of them. a loaded 7 Rem SAUM with a 175gr Sierra measures 3.1" so heaps of room in the mag. as for 700 Win short mags you can neck the 300 WSM Norma cases down to 7mm and use them just make a false shoulder. but i believe the Rem case is a better design and they do feed better than the WSM's i have batched my cases and had no trouble. I have heard that some people with loose 300 SAUM chambers had made cases out of 300 WSM norma cases that is a lot of work. If you are happy with the 7mm Rem Mag go with it but the 7mm SAUM would be better for your purpose in my opinion. the 175gr Sierra is 1.230" from boat tail to tip and the over all length is 1.445.

that's what i was wondering about the 7Rm, i`ve read it`s had it`s place in the past but now most everybody shots 6.5-284`s. i need something with better barrel life so i can practice without burning it up.

So far it only exists in my head & a few drawings I've made, but I'm pretty much after the same thing as you. I started out attempting to make a long necked 6.5X284 suitable for a long action with VLD bullets. My theory is that the longer neck might improve barrel life. I started with 7.5X55 Swiss cases necked to 6.5. & improved. Now I'm leaning towards the 376 steyr case necked to 7mm. This should produce a long necked .284 with a more conventional rim than a .284 WIN for more reliable feed from a magazine & slightly more capacity. It should be a little less capacity than the 7mm Rem mag. I'm working with a commercial Mauser action & this allows 4 rds in the mag versus 3 for a belted mag case. I'm more interested in a long range tactical type rifle than a target rifle so magazine feed is important to me. Though I think this ctg would be ideal for 1000 yd bench rest with the Berger 185 gr VLD. Norma makes excellent cases for the 7.5 X 55 Swiss as its widely used in Europe for competition. But the only manufacturer that I'm aware of for 376 Steyr cases is Hornady. I'm sure their cases are good enough for a tactical rifle, I don't know about bench rest. M9

RWS makes the .376 Steyr type cases too, sold as the 9.3x64 Brenneke, which is the parent case for the Steyr. Huntinton's sells them for $26 a box.

I`m still stuck on my 7 mag, i just love to shoot it and i dont see a need to start all over with a diferent round. know i just need the time to get to my `smiths house and get this show on the road. does anyone know if i could get bottom metal for my R700 action in the 8mm mag size? i`ll need a drop mag and if i could get one to fit in 7RM i`de do it. i`m sure Badger could do it but i cant find there # to find out. if i could find something for less $$$ it would be good cause i`ll be buying some land soon and it will cut my gun fundage for a while. still gona build the gun though so i can shoot competition this year, somewhere). buy the way Russ, my box mag is 3.6 in my 700, i dont know if a drop box would be any diferent but thats what i`ll have when this whole things over and if i got to go with an 8mm gig thats what i`ll do.

On the bottom metal, you may want to order the Brownels catalog they carry several brands. not to mention a ton of other stuff you may want. They also carry the Wyatts box magazine. I think you may be wasting your time & money on that because there is plenty of room with the one you have now. That is if your gunsmith gives you the proper freebore. I have a Badger bottom metal on my tactical rifle & I have to say it is one beefy bugger. I could pry a bead loose on a flat tire with that baby, but it was very expensive. You will get what you pay for though. Have you decided on a barrel maker yet? how about glass?

A good match bbl like Dan Lilja's will minimize the copper fouling as they are real smooth. Doesn't take too much break in and doesn't copper up fast. So far as the mercury recoil devices, I think the main improvement is the extra 8oz that they weigh. With a good pad and running the max weight you probably shouldn't have too much problem with the recoil. It is an individual thing though, your mileage may vary. Good shooting, JimDee

I`m pretty sure I`ll be going with a Krieger barrel for this project. It sounds like the cut barreling offers more barrel life than button rifling and for about the same price, it sounds like it`s worth trying. What i`m not sure of yet is how long i want it, i don`t know what max weights are for competition but i need this gun to be heavy to help me fight some recoil. I like the heavy varmint contour so i guess 26"s and a Mc millan A5 stock should keep it good on the scale. I`m not sure on what glass to get. I`ll have to start on the lower end and work up. The land I`m buying is gonna kick my gun money`s butt for while so this whole project will happen in little steps at a time-I wish i saved my pennies better, lol. Any advice for barrel length?

Picking glass & barrel maker are a personel decision in my opinion, its like Chevy & Ford. If you go with one of the big names I think you will be happy. Ive had good luck with Kreiger.
Just as an update, I took a fellow shooter of mine out yesterday to bang some steel. He saw the 1 mile shot I made & wanted to try it real bad so we were hoping for some good weather up here in the actic tundra. wed, Thurs, & Fri the temp was around 40 & the Wind was no more than 8MPH. Of course when the weekend came we get just pure crap weather. Our goal was to get going by 6:30AM to beat the wind & shooting by 8:30 am. Well when I was packing the war wagon at 5:30 it was already cruzing at 8mph acording to the radio. By the time we got to the place & shooting it was gusty & 15MPH +. He was shooting a 300 WM & shot 10 rounds of wich I never saw one impact. I managed to hit it twice out of 5 with seeing every impact with the ole 7 Rem Mag. Im not sure his 220 Match Kings were making it through the Trans sonic speed. We gave up queickly & got out of the wind & shot some detergent jugs at 1000yds. I watched his 8 year old son pop a jug at 1000yds with that 300 WM. Awsome! Nothing wrong with a 7mm Rm Mag in my opionion. I would go 26" if it was me. 30" if I was going to use it as a Match only rifle.
Good luck on your Land Purchase, Thats always a good investment, I herd they are not making any more ; )

I just went over 400 Remington 7mm SAUM cases, and the weights were better than Remington brass usually is.
307 of them stayed in the 220 grain range, from 219.3 to 220.8) the rest of them went from a low of 218.4 to the highest of 221.9, with only one going 224.2.
I don't think that is to bad for Remington brass.
Very little amount of burrs in the inside flash hole, and the primer pockets cleaned up with very little effort.
But I sure wish Lapua would make them........

hey preacher, that is alright for rem brass, right know i use win brass for my 7rm and it don`t wiegh out that good. i have decided to go with the 7rm for my project mostly cause of the better brass availible for it, although i really havent tried any like the nosler or horady, ive heard its good stuff. not just that though, i like my 7 mag and really dont see a lot of reasons to try any different 7mm rounds. know i need to start, saving pennies) to get this show on the road. i will get a Krieger ss for her but i`m having some difficulty deciding what conture i want, most likely go with a heavy varmint#17 or a staight bull, this will be a field rifle too so i don`t want too much wieght, 15-18lbs ok, but no more, i hope some extra wieght will help me fight reciol. Its been really bizzy in the oil patch and yesterday i finally got a chance to reload a new batch of rounds for my 7, i got my 150 nos bt`s @3.460 jamed .010 and my 120 v-max @ 3.360 jamed .005 in front of H4831. i hope to get out today and try these out with my new Pact chronograff i got and maybee an unfortunate patch poodle, overkill). -SHOOT SAFE

Update

Big Brother said his Ar10 wasnt shooting to his likeing so i took it for a test drive. I bought some more Remington Brass in 300 SAUM for it. I then weighed it out. Much to my suprise as the preacher said there was only a 2.7 grain from high to low on this batch of 50. I was in shock after the last couple of hundred I purchased was like a turkey crapping on the floor. The flash holes were not so good but that we can fix. I loaded some H414 & a 168 match king that I had left over from my M-14 days & shot two groups under .500 MOA.
Looks like I had stuck my foot in my mouth this time fellas, but that first batch of cases was real bad.
Patch hound you mentioned Nosler brass for the 7 Mag. My hunting partner used it this last year & so far seems to like it. I use Norma & they are both expensive, you make sure you pick up your empies at a $1 a case.
I heard there paying Worms corner $24/hr up here now, right off the dang street! Buddy of mine just got a $1800 bonus for finishing the hole early. That would build A nice gun.
First long range match up here on the 6th of May.

S`up Russ, damn worms are starting at $26 hr. were in WY. I work on a workover rig and we start at 17.25 hr. but we work every day exept sun. and were home every night. i thought of tring some H414 for my 120`s in my 7, only thing is i don`t know how good it would do when it`s hot out. H4831 did ok with my 150 nos bt`s but sunday i ended up mostly makeing patch poodles dead with my 6br. i did get into jack rabbits outside of the patch with my 7 and it was like the damn 4th of July, i must admit right now i`m just a lowly varmint shooter who wants to shoot in a match. i think i should change my handle to Captain Carnage. i don`t think i ever had so much fun, stalking jack rabbits with a sporter 7mag is a blast. 120`s did alright but those 150 nos bt`s made a really big mess- too bad the name deathstick already took. i might as well have some fun with this barrel before i switch it out. funny thing is that after shootting around 40 rounds out of my 7 it felt like i shoot a 300 mag once so thats got to say something good about the ol 7mag:lol:
