7MM Rem Mag build

This is my first attempt at gunsmithing, I finally have this rifle ready to shoot but still need to finish up a few small things before Ceracoat. I started with a Savage 110 action I've for 30 years. I picked up a barrel blank from Kreiger in 1:8.5 twist. It finished off right at 27 inches.

After the barrel was done i had to make a barrel nut and a wrench to put it on.

I started milling out a chassis, this is the second version, I wasn't really happy with the first attempt, I was stalled for a few moths at this stage, I was struggling with what to use for a buttstock, I picked up a Magpull and was going to use it and then I saw the Accuracy International AX folder and decided that was what I wanted.

Here's the rifle complete in shooting form. I still have to finish the mag release which will be a lever on the side. Right now the mag is held in with a rod that has to be removed to drop the mag out, it works and will allow me to begin barrel break in and i'll finish it when time allows. I was shooting for 25 lbs. and without the scope it cam in at 23.20 lbs so with the scope i'm pretty close to my target. I also have a Thunderbeast Ultra 9 that will be used on it as well. Thanks for looking and feedback is welcome, good or bad. As with any project there are a few things I would do differen't but overall i'm really happy with the results. The next one is already in the planning stages and hopefully i'll take more pictures and document the build better.

Agree on the bbl nut, why have it, but it appears you did an excellent job on it and the wrench. Very in depth project that I would never have attempted so I can't not commend you sir. Great job.

I only see two pics with your dial indicater on the range rod. You probably did this but that range rod needs indicated near the barrel face and perhaps not so far out on the range rod. Two points until you can repeat -0- at each. Because of your fixture I would assume you already did this. Good job on setting the dial indicator out to avoid unnecessary preload of the indicator quill.

Again great job and a magnatude of work you put in. No doubt you should be proud of yourself. Follow up with some groups.

Thanks for posting.

To clarify the nut comment(s). Just because it's a savage does not mean you need a nut. You can run a shouldered bbl.
I don't think the original comment and for sure mine meant you did bad on the nut. Just pointing out it's not necessary to use one when rolling your own.

Thanks, yes the rod was indicated at both ends. The homemade spider chuck has 2 places to adjust, with that I was able to get the indexing rod perfectly aligned. Like any first time doing things, there's always something you would do different. I toyed with the idea of direct threading the barrel. I had planned on making the nut to look like a revolver cylinder and making a spanner type wrench for it, but this project was starting to run into shooting season and I just wanted it done. I have another build i'm getting ready to start, it's off a REM 700 action.

I found few pictures of the chassis in the mill when the top profile was getting machined.
