how come when a bunch of guys tell the OP to really clean his barrel that has been neglected they dont get attacked and tag teamed by a few easily offended people? they are telling the OP the same thing I said that he did not maintain his rifle

Not saying this adversarially, just trying to explain, so please don’t take offense. I think the issue isn’t what you said but how you said it. It was a little more on the nose than hey op clean your rifle.
you gave a good take on it and I like your advice and have no malice for you at all. I just cant believe how the right complains how easily offended the left is then they do the same thing
attack? all I said is maybe the guy might be to old to handle the tasks of shooting. would you let an real old guy drive a car if he could not keep it on the road? would you accuse a guy of attacking him over his age if the guy said maybe you should not drive and get somebody to drive for you? I am almost 70 and I will know when I am to old to do certain things.
Age has nothing to do with abusing or neglecting your equipment. Ive seen young and old do it at the range. The only thing that has given me pause in this whole thread is the part about the rust in the chamber. The gun had been in the hands of the owner for 6 months and had probably been in the pipe line of manufacturer to distributor to dealer and on his shelves for 2 to 6 months maybe more. So Savage has not touched the rifle for almost a year. But the owner sent it back to Savage cause the chamber was rusted. How can they be responsible for rust when out of their hands for this long?

I had ~2500 rounds on my Savage LRP factory barrel before it started going off. By going off, I mean that the accuracy went from 1/4 to 1/2 MOA to a little over 3/4 MOA. I chased the lands for a couple hundred rounds by seating the bullets out a little further but then changed the barrel to an aftermarket prefit. Takes about 15 minutes to change a barrel on one of those if you have the tools (barrel vise, action wrench, nut wrench). That barrel would have still been considered a tack driver by most shooters who are not competing and do not put a lot of rounds down range. When I scoped the barrel it was fire cracked a third the way up it's length. Amazing the thing shot at all but it did and it did it fairly well.
P.S. When it started going off I explained to Monte what I was seeing at a match. He said it's probably heavily fire cracked. He was correct. Still got that barrel Monte. If you want to show someone what fire cracking looks like I'll give it to you as a sample.

i shot my first CBI barrel out at 1200 rounds (my fault alot of long strings on hot days ) rebarreled it to a shilen now i slow it down . if you get a barrel get bull barrel so you can chop off the chamber and rechamber it again (already did it once to a Mcgowen) . i have the tools to rebarrel if you want to borrow them and you tube is your friend .
Thank you for the offer and your comments. I’m surprised at the number of completely unhelpful comments I’ve received on this thread. So much for a gun community. It’s been more like a gun “look how smart I am and how dumb you are” community. I’m not an expert gun enthusiast, never claimed to be. That’s the whole reason I belong to this forum, for guidance from people who know better than me. I subscribe to the idea that if you want to get where someone is, do what they did.
Let me explain how I came up with $1000 for a new barrel, not that I need too, but Jesus Christ people. About a year and a half ago I was at my gunsmiths shop picking up my suppressor. We were shooting the shit about rifles as usual and I casually asked what it would cost to rebarrel my rifle. I don’t remember exactly what he said and didn’t give it much thought as my rifle was shooting well. I just remembered it being something like a thousand bucks. Turns out it’s $500 all in. I didn’t realize I was speaking to a jury of my peers when I threw out the thousand dollar comment.
And while we’re at it, if you’re going to throw out some dumbass snarky comment, at the very least, don’t throw out a dumbass snarky comment that was already thrown out a few comments before. Get some original material or at least read the thread before you comment.
To those of you who gave me helpful guidance and direction, thank you I appreciate it. I’ll probably have my rifle up and running by the end of the week and I’m excited to see how it shoots. Especially during my deer hunt in Montana at the end of October.

Most barrel jobs are about $750 to $1000, that includes the cost of the barrel. I guess people were taken back that it was a savage and a good prefit is pretty cheap. $125 for an hours worth of work sounds about right for a smith. That’s what a good cerakote job or trigger job costs anyway.

Every group ( family, work, forums etc...) has those that everyone else just shake their heads at. Don’t be discouraged. I read lots of threads on here and have found loads of good info, but I tend to stop reading when members/guest start debating the value of their preferred method, product or gunsmith.
But that’s just me and I’m willing to wade through the things I’m not interested in to find the info I need or want.

Yeah, Most of the members here are decent with their responses`,you just have a couple jackwagons that can`t resist the urge to be a PITA.Some threads get so bad I have to go back to #1 to see what we are discussing. Hey I change socks twice a day, because I like to and it makes my feet feel good. But I mentioned that here one time and some of the comments were like I insulted their mother.
